    They don't have that much range. The scanner runs on a few AA batteries, and has a range of about 300 meters. They don't have a whole lot of memory, usually just one paragraph or so. I would imagine it has your VIN, some manufacturer gobbledygook, destination, etc. It is my understanding that there is a worldwide standard for the text, and there are automatic scanners set up on freeways, railways, and at ports of entry that scan the contents onto the bill of lading so the shipper can track the shipment from womb to tomb so to speak. I'm not a logistics guy, but I played one in the Army for a while and just know how that particular system worked. I can't imagine it would be much different for any other large company moving millions of pieces over large distances. I suppose it could be used for nefarious means, but in my experience bad guys prefer blowing stuff up rather than driving us crazy with lost and rerouted shipments.
