What is this piece of the bumper for?

Hey y'all, I got a Pelfreybilt bumper a month ago and since it went on I wondered what the removable pieces on the sides of my bumper were for. I can't see anything obvious. Am I ok removing them so the truck looks better and so they don't get snagged on rocks?

 

It's just an extension to the front bar. Run without it.

 

Apparently, it is a frame extension to help protect steering and suspension components.

If removed, one member replaced the bolt.
