2016 TRD off road with manual transmission. I didn't notice the noise until I had about 2k miles on the truck. I'm now sitting on almost 26k, and I've been noticing it more regularly, along with the differential whine. . .

What is it? It's recorded from my phone which is propped on my front tire while recording this. You can hear it immediately at the beginning of the video. It's harder to hear once it revs up but it gets faster with the engine it seems.

Sounds perfectly normal for a diesel engine.

With the direct injection that is design into the 3.5L engine, it is normal and the recommendation is for you to use the search feature before you start posting.

Came here to say that. We get the noise of a diesel without the torque, gas mileage, or towing capacity.

It is normal or if you have enemies it could be a ticking time bomb.

A back step for when I get older, Carhartt seatcovers, 4Runner wheels, Topper, and "tats all folks"! --for now!!
Mine sounds the same, I heard it before I signed the deal -went ahead and signed-- I took it back in to the dealer with 235 miles on it -said I was concerned. Sales people brought a new one in to the service writer's bay and we set them side by side. The "new" one had 23 miles on it (I think it was one I test drove). The sound was definitely there on the newer one as well -just not as loud. I made them document the visit. I had another person/friend call the noise "the Tacoma tick"!? FWIW-
It seems louder when you listen from the passenger side of the motor. Time will tell if it is anything to be worried about --other than the noise my truck seems fine with a whopping 475 miles on it.

Have the same ticking with my 2018 at idle (500 miles on the odo), the a/c was on so I’m guessing that’s why the rpms keep fluctuating, the noise isn’t as frequent as yours but sound is the same, can only be heard in the passenger side wheel well after warm up which is where this video was taken:
