Never really thought or cared to pay attention to it.The smaller of the two with doors is basically the same size as the two without so Toyota should of just had them all have doors and all lockable instead of having to buy a lock system for them.

People use the ones with doors? I just thought there were there to hold a buildup of dirt.

And those people would be stupid. The Tacoma engine does not get its air induction that way.

I had the little cubbies on my previous 2nd gen Tacomas. I like them. I found them handy. My new 2015 does not have them.

Sandwich holders. I bet a Ruben with extra mustard fits perfect. Or a nice slice of sashimi.. Depends on where the marketing campaign was done.

Because they didn't invent doors when they were installed? Heck who knows. It's old tech anyway. The new doors on the 2016 bed will open with a blue tooth connection app, click the remote 3 times. You'll need to update the app every 2 months due to the doors flying open when you play the latest Nickel back song. Flying Rubens! To be the convertible behind the flying Ruben... Yummmm!

Weathertech floor liners moded to hold OEM floor mats, weathertech vent visors, Toyota bed mat, LEER 100XL cap, hood gasket mod to stop whistling.
In the 7 years that I owned my 06, I never once used them. They are called useless... They were eliminated in 2013 and I don't miss the one bit. I did however like the post with LEDs in them.

Speaking of cubby holes, why can't they make the other ones weather tight? If you remove the door, you can see ground. Anything that you put in there is exposed to road dirt. The only thing that I keep in there are plastic bags to throw fish that I catch on the way back from a fishing adventure..... Very poor design.

Perfect hiding spot! An open cubby! They won't look there because who would hide drugs in the open? Fool-proof!

I at least hope that is the case. Otherwise I would be qualified to be an engineer.

The little doors are an "add on" feature like the roof rack, bed mat or the skid plate from TOYOTA. They have them on their website for like 65 a piece.
