Hey guys if you had to pick one tool kit for basic tinkering or even major work what would it be

Just picked this up last night new STANLEY black chrome so you can get dirty while turning them bolts and look sexy too on a side note I do have a kobalt roller chest full of tools but it's not as portable

I'm debating on investing in some snap on tools anyone using them? we have a local vendor that drives a truck around selling snap on he replaces what ever you buy if it fails no questions asked.

My dad bought me a Craftsman 3 ratchet set when I graduated High School. It has Standard and Metric sockets and wrenches, probably around 250pc. It's in a black plastic case probably around 20"x20" or so. Can't believe 16 years later and still no missing pieces.

I just have a bunch of misc. hand tools, don't own any power tools, except for a battery operated drill I got recently from my best friend. Some are my grandpa's old Craftsman tools, a couple Stanleys, but most are from Harbor Freight. I have one tool that's Snap On, and it's a really old pair of dikes. Don't even know where they came from. I recently acquired a tool box, so it currently sits in my truck with 60-70 pounds of misc. tools in it at this point.

I own mostly Craftsman tools - I find them a good balance between cost and (perceived) good quality and design. I've over the years splurged on a few Snap-On tools - mostly specialty tools and enjoy using them :). I have also had surprisingly good luck with Pittsburgh Professional tools from Harbor Freight.

So to answer the OP question; if cost was no issue I'd probably go with Craftsman, but for an "always in the truck" kit Pittsburgh Pro would be ok with me too.

I really don't mind Pittsburgh tools myself. There are some things I would not get from Harbor Freight, but for most everyday tools, they are great. I generally don't care for Harbor Freight ratchets, but I have a flex ratchet from them that I absolutely love.

Yeah, I generally shy away from anything from HF with a cutting edge or point that needs to stay "pointy" :) But Pittsburgh Pro seems like good value for the $$.

That's pretty much my rule for Harbor Freight tools.

The air tools suck from HF and if you use it they won't return in store found that out the hard way

My old man worked in a shop his whole life and says snap on is a rip off and poor quality. Keep in mind though he is old and cranky...lol
