I wanted a 2nd Gen. Everything in my neck of the woods was crazy overpriced. Looked around for over 3yrs until I stumbled upon a 2016 AC TRD OR with 13k miles. Dealer was asking 29k, got it for 27k. Put down 10k and my payments are $370 for 72 months.

I give the OP props for getting people's opinions/experiences and changing his priority on a brand new truck. You're young, man. I'm 39 and just bought my '17 Tacoma. Before that I drove a Hyundai Elantra for 10 years that I bought brand new for probably like $15k. If you question whether you can afford it or not, then you can't. But like I said, you're young. One day you will be able to. Today probably isn't that day. Trust me, keep your bills low. Go out and enjoy being young. You have your whole life to have a $400/mo. truck payment.

    Here is another financial tip:

You can build credit with a charge card instead of a credit card. I hate credit cards so I use a charge card and its been great with managing finances.

You definitely want to be able to afford it, not get in over your head. That said the Tacoma can be a way of life, camping, overlanding, getting out with your buddies. You want to be responsible but at the same time don't wait till your 50 to get one. Life is not predictable!

Try the 80/20 rule. Live off of 80% save 20%. I started doing this a while back. Your retirement will look nice when you are in your 50s.

You can still get out with your buddies at 50.

It just hurts more, it's slower, and we can't drink like we used to.

It's all about how he wants to live. I see lots of people overlanding, camping, and fishing the shit out of the land because their rigs are awesome. Then they go home to a small condo with no wife or kids. You want a house? Family? Well until you have the income to support all of that and more then a new truck might not be a great move.

Good to know! I'm 49. Plan on using the excuse I'm 50 to buy some good parts for my truck, pretend to have a mid life crisis!
