I'm not sure yet. i havent been around to look at them yet. Just getting an idea for now. I really should just go test ride one and see what size i would need. i like the 250s for the fact that they get about 70 mpg but i would also like to have some power. decisions decisions.....

yeah id prolly want some more power if i was drivin one on the street. but a good dealership nearby would deff influence what brand of bike I chose. go to the honda, yamaha, ktm, kawasaki, and suzuki websites and punch in your zip code and find out whats close.

This will be my first real motorcycle I've owned so I don't think I need a street bike. Also i want to be able to take it on some trails so that won't work.

well I can tell you the wild fires run decent have plenty of power (for their size) and are reliable, also a + is they will ship them right to your door. lets face it if this is your first bike chances are you are going to drop it atleast once..even if you just knock it over in garage or something I would rather drop a 2K bike then a 5K one

I know couple guys with thier fourwheelers, dirt bikes and mopeds etc and they can take a good beating only real complaint is the plastic is kinda flimsy but seems like it doesnt break as easy then... it gives and bends then snaps back

i really like the KTMs but they're so darn expensive. You get what u pay for though I assume. How is the maintenance on a KTM? as far as driving it to work and such?

I don't know much (yet) about the cost of the maintaince on the KTMs but I am going to bet that it will be more than your standard jap bike. Looking at the owners manual for mine, just the oil change looks to be a 2 hour process. Plus I have heard that parts are not always the easiest to get. But maybe that is just the street bikes.
I would suggest a Kawasaki KLR 650. There are tons of them around here and people just love the damn things. From what I have heard they are pretty much bullet proof. The only complaint I have heard is the front forks are a little weak but there are some budget fixes for that you could probably find out about on some KLR forum.
    just my two cents

well i dont ever ride his 525 but on my 250 xcf-w its also a ktm equivelent to the 525 exc but smaller size, i havent had to do anything. if you get it brand new after 20 hours the shop services it for 200 bucks and then after that nothing. i have close to 1000 miles on mine and 60 hours of abuse. they are great bikes, and if your looking go to the dealer near you jan and feburary they will be trying to get rid of the 09s and thats what i did and i got 2.5k off the sticker price.

I have owned several DS bikes, if you want to adventure tour (long road miles) go with a Kawi KLR 650 or a BMW if $ is no issue. If you want to really off road w/o modification get a DRZ 400 S, capable Dirt bike not too heavy rides good on road. If you realllllly want to ride off road buy a nice trail bike & put a baja designs DS kit on, makes it street legal(horn,battery,tail/head light, turn signals).

Ive heard alot about the drz400. my cousin even recommended it. Would that be too heavy of a bike for a beginner? I alos like the idea of getting a trail bike and making it street legal.

The DRZ 400 is the best metric DS bike out there. KTM,Huskys,BMW make great bikes but who has that kind of cash? How much off road riding have you done? It a big thumper (single cylinder 4 stroke), with alot of power for a 400, one of the best stock set of forks of any bike I have ever ridden. Check out thumper talk they are to 4 strokes what tacomaworls is to tacos. Those guys are mod crazy.

the drz is pretty light. its a closest bike to a dirtbike as you can get and be legal. great starter bike and pretty cheap new. you can get a great deal on used ones as well. some of the ktms are tricky to register because of the wording on the title. they dont state "offroad use only" but dont have lights, blinkers,or a plate mount. kinda a loophole

I havent done alot of off road riding with a bike in quite a while. Mostly a 4wheeler. I understand a 400 might be a little much for me right now, but I want room to grow in. I feel if I get a 250 I will get bored with it.
