I’m about to replace the pads on my 03 Tacoma SR5 but the caliper looks different then anything I’ve seen for first gens. I’m new to the Tacoma world (I’ve had the truck for over a year but I do a lot of driving, thus the reason for the replacement) so I’m wondering if this was an upgrade or anyone is familiar with what pads fit this caliper. Thanks, I obviously don’t know anything (yet) and every tutorial I’ve read and watched was on the 6 lug without realizing they are different. That’s why I’m here!

That upper ball joint looks in need as well.

Yup, I live in Arizona so anything rubber doesn’t last long. I guess that’s the trade off for no rust.

It appears you have a 5-Lug truck. The brake, suspension, and frame are very very different from 6-Lug or PreRunner trucks. The 6-lugs are four piston, while the 5-lugs are single piston.

If you wanted to do some modding you can use Cadillac CTS-V calipers on the 5-lug.

Unscrew those two bolts visible on the back side and the top of the caliper lifts off. Then you simply drop new stuff pads in. Much simpler design that the 6lug calipers. 6lug calipers have two pins that the pads slide on and they are a bitch to get out if they’re rusty.

The boot on that upper ball joint looks like it needs some love too.

I decided to do the rotors as well and I’m having issues getting the 14mm bolts that hold the rotor to the hub off. I’ve tried a breaker bar, an impact gun, a propane, PB Blaster, to no avail. Is there any trick to breaking those bolts that would make life easier (and save my back!)?

was my guess as well. OP, make sure you're lefty loosey from the correct orientation, because the bolts are threading towards you (backwards), they'll be spun to the right if you're lookign at the face of the caliper.

I was trying lefty loosey. Are these left handed threads? Should I be going “righty loosey” then?

I wish like Hell I had that style caliper, I absolutely hate these stupid four piston crappy ass calipers with the stupid floating pads and crappy little pins!!!! They drive me mental. I swear it’s more practical to replace the calipers with every brake job. They are probably just fine in Arizona on nice roads but they don’t belong in New England They SUCK:annoyed:

Looks like the lasership logo..But they don't make calipers so that doesn't make any sense.

not left handed threads. not sure what else to try. maybe let some PB blaster soak? they don't look too dirty or rusty, theyre torqued less than 100ftlbs, they shouldnt be that tight, which is why i asked about lefty loosey with the correct orientation.

Might need a nice long pipe to slide over the breaker bar handle and give you more leverage. If you have impact tools, I'd use them to zip those bolts off but no impact tool to reinstall them

Get a torch and apply some heat. It will help.
