And honestly, i don't think those cons are really all that bad. What model do you have?

the “Cons” set the GLAMPERS apart from those who actually like to CAMP.

Those,of,us who have aged, maybe not so gracefully, a popup allows the option of TENT camping with out being on the ground. And a nice place to store some extra stuff. AC is a bonus, and can be Daytime “usable” with some easy mods, heat, same thing, if required.
Tent camping or popup camping sucks in the rain either way.
But it’s still camping, and that’s what makes it desirable.

I like the small hard side trailer for the same reason. I have a bathroom when on the road and the galley if I want lunch, quick to park and set up, and lite enough to not kill mpg. They are easy to heat and cool and are a little quieter for sleeping. I went with a fiberglass model because they are known to be a little more watertight. We all have are preference's and after you buy and sell several you will end up with what works for your style camping.

Only hardside popup/expandable I've found that can kinda sorta match the visibility and ventilation of your softside is Trailmanor. This Trailmanor 2619 pictured has eight sliders on the sides, barndoor entry door counts as one more, fore and aft louvered windows.

We sported the 2619 for two years, very good offroad even without the factory lift blocks. Trailmanor is still in business so has parts support. https://trailmanor.com/

Can leave it hooked up to the tow vehicle and still expand it for a quick setup. Outside expansion is about 5-10 minutes for 1 or 2 people. Inside setup is about 10-15 minutes for 1 or 2 people.

I recommend Trailmanor for people that don't mind setup time and no access on the road. It's also a 4-season trailer, 20g stock fresh tank (40g was optional) is inside under the dinette seat. Sold it for a trailer that has full access on the road instead of using a McDonald's bathroom.

I have a Shamrock Hybrid, I can set it up in minutes or even just turtle up, bath and kitchen are accessible even in travel mode, and it opens up like you would not believe.
We were set on a popup until we could not find one in good or new condition, then we looked at the hybrid and wondered what we were thinking.

Can you share which brake controller and weight distribution hitch you went with? I'm looking hard at the R-pod 178 and just need an idea of how to prepare the Taco. Never towed anything larger than a 6ft flatbed trailer so this forum has been extremely informative.

Many folks around here (myself included) have the Tekonsha P3 brake controller. It is plug and play if you have the tow package.

The weight distribution hitch I got from my trailer dealer and is the e2 Hitch, round bar style. It has been good for me.

I'd also recommend the Redarc Tow-Pro Elite for a brake controller. If you have an empty blank switch spot they make a mount for it. Both are sold on etrailer along with the wiring harness adapter (3031-S). Looks darn near OEM once you have it in there. Take a look at my mod thread in my signature if you want to see.

As for as the WDH with anti-sway, I also have the E2 that was setup by the place I bought the camper from and it works well.

it’s awesome to see what camper setups people have. I’m looking for one, and I just rented this Tab 320s from a guy who winterized it a bit, mainly by adding a more insulated heavier duty housing to the “basement” (underside) area. I spent a week camped off a forest service road in northeastern Washington with about 9 inches of accumulated snow... the Tab did well, though it didn’t have great tires on it. I like Tabs for the size and maneuverability with the truck but wow, they’re expensive new. Also interested in Escapes or Casitas, but it seems hard to find small 4 season trailers that come prepared for winter weather from the factory.

I’ve had two really awesome squaredrop/tear drop campers in the last few years that I absolutely loved. Unfortunately they both met unfortunate demises. I pulled this little guy with my old Durango to Baja and all over the west. This one got blown over outside of Moab in high winds on i70. The other camper was brand new and had only 4 trips on it before a poor manufacturing decision caused it to fall apart on a cattle road on the way to a camping trip. Pretty scarred from those experiences now unfortunately. Maybe looking at wedge campers for the future but who knows.

Comet 18DS, the one compact floorplan we found with counterspace. Jayco and Rpod make similar trailers. Can't wait to get back out next year.

WOW! What an awesome thread. I have been wanting a camper now that I am getting older, and find sleeping in a tent a bit more uncomfortable. I have feared having to trade in the Tacoma double cab for something more heavy duty, but this thread might just convince me otherwise.

Welcome! It all depends on your style and preference, but yes the Tacoma does just great with the little campers. If your are one of those (or are married to one of those) that has to tow the two bedroom penthouse suite, that's when you might want to consider a bigger truck. :D

Plenty of camper options out there for you. For us, it has proven to be a capable tow vehicle. But like @Rock Lobster said no penthouses for you lol. We chose a dry weight camper that was half the max. Just choose wisely accordingly and all is well.
