Purina dog chow.. wow!......I wouldn't eat it.. I'll have to try and get my bulldog on something else.

    Feeding guideline:
A 50lb dog should be fed about 2-2/3 cups

    Ingredients
Whole grain corn, poultry by-product meal, animal fat preserved with mixed-tocopherols (form of Vitamin E), corn gluten meal, meat and bone meal, brewers rice, soybean meal, barley, whole grain wheat, animal digest, calcium carbonate, salt, calcium phosphate, potassium chloride, L-Lysine monohydrochloride, choline chloride, zinc sulfate, Vitamin E supplement, zinc proteinate, ferrous sulfate, added color (Red 40, Yellow 5, Blue 2, Yellow 6), DL-Methionine, manganese sulfate, manganese proteinate, niacin, Vitamin A supplement, copper sulfate, calcium pantothenate, copper proteinate, garlic oil, pyridoxine hydrochloride, Vitamin B-12 supplement, thiamine mononitrate, Vitamin D-3 supplement, riboflavin supplement, calcium iodate, menadione sodium bisulfite complex (source of Vitamin K activity), folic acid, biotin, sodium selenite.

    Guaranteed Analysis
    Crude Protein (Min) 21.0%
    Crude Fat (Min) 10.0%
    Crude Fiber (Max) 4.5%
    Moisture (Max) 12.0%
    Linoleic Acid (Min) 1.5%
    Calcium (Ca) (Min) 1.0%
    Phosphorus (P) (Min) 0.8%
    Vitamin A (Min) 10,000 IU/kg

The primary ingredient in this food is corn. Corn is a difficult to digest grain of limited value in dog food, and which is also commonly associated with food allergies. Even if this had been a good quality grain, we would still note that grains are an unnatural foodstuff for canines, and that dog food products should be based on meat rather than grain.

The next ingredient in the food is poultry byproduct meal. This is a very low quality ingredient, not even identified by species and thus of unidentifiable source. "Poultry" could be any fowl and may also vary by source. Unidentified ingredients like this are usually cheap and of very low quality. We prefer not to see them used in dog foods. In this case, the ingredient is also byproducts, which is “a meal consisting of the ground, rendered, clean parts of the carcass of slaughtered poultry, such as necks, feet, undeveloped eggs and intestines, exclusive of feathers, except in such amounts as might occur unavoidable in good processing practice.”

Animal fat is an ingredient of unidentified origin for which it is impossible to determine species, source or quality. Unidentified ingredients are usually very low quality. AAFCO define this asobtained from the tissues of mammals and/or poultry in the commercial processes of rendering or extracting. It consists predominantly of glyceride esters of fatty acids and contains no additions of free fatty acids. If an antioxidant is used, the common name or names must be indicated, followed by the words "used as a preservative".

Corn gluten meal, next on the ingredient list, is also low quality. This is defined as that part of the commercial shelled corn that remains after the extraction of the larger portion of the starch, gluten, and term by the processes employed in the wet milling manufacture of corn starch or syrup. In plain English, the remains of corn after most of the nutritious bits have been removed.

Meat and bone meal is an extremely low quality ingredient. It is the rendered product from mammal tissues, including bone, exclusive of blood, hair, hoof, horn, hide trimmings, manure, stomach and rumen contents, except in such amounts as may occur unavoidably in good processing practices. We would have greater confidence in this ingredient as fertilizer than as a dog food ingredient.

Brewers rice is a low quality grain and byproduct. Soybean meal boosts the protein content of the food, but Soy is a product we prefer not to see used in dog foods, especially this high on the ingredient list. Soy is a very common cause of food allergy problems, and although boosting the (otherwise minimal) protein content of this food, it is very low quality protein compared to that sourced from meat. Barley is a decent quality grain, but wheat, although a whole grain, is believed by many to be the leading cause of food allergies in dog food. Brewers rice is a further low quality grain and byproduct.

We note the presence of synthetic vitamin K - a substance alleged by some to be linked to liver problems and which is progressively being removed from better quality products. There is no excuse for adding artificial colorings or sugar to dog food products.

I tried that blue buffalo stuff when i first got my pup. Caused nothing but explosive diarrhea. So that all natural holistic crap didn't work. So eventually I changed it to purina one and it's been solid ever since.

Our boy Golden Retriever is on Hill's Science Diet sensitive skin. Our girl Golden Retriever is on a Royal Canin Senior formula and sometimes she has to go on perscription diets because she gets UTI's (urinary tract infection) a lot and has had a few bouts of bladder stones. She is really old though. Thank goodness my girlfriend is a vet-tech so we get discounts on food and vet care.

I use pedegry (sp) small bites (hard food) for my dutch. My dog is odd though, she's more or less sick when it comes to other foods, esp. soft foods. so pretty much I have to feed her that or she will be puking it all over the place from time to time or her poop will be all watery (she even gets diarrhea).

I have had a terrible time finding Orijen lately. Ever since they put that stupid doogfood of the year sticker on the bags, availability is nill. Last time I went I could only get the big big bag and that a small hole in it. Got $10 off, but it is a lot of food lol. I have a nice airtight container (Gamma Seal FTW) to save it.

Hopefully when I go back they will have everything sorted out. Owner was telling me that he gets about 15-20 calls from ticked off dog owners about this issue. He showed me a stack of orders a least 6" tall that were for Orijen. I guess I lucked out with the broken bag.

We have 2 rescue dogs and they eat different foods.

My baby, Brandy, is 11 years old and has health issues (bladder infections, kidney stones, etc.) I make a chicken stew for her. 60% dark meat, 20% organ meat, 20% vegatables. I tried a raw diet, but that didn't work well.

Our hound, Harley, is a vacuum cleaner. He had a really rough 1st 4 years and has been trying to make up for it. We feed him a combo of EVO big chunks, canned pumpkin and celery/lettuce (vet suggested "salad" to get his weight down).

Everything that has been listed above about most pet foods is true. REMEMBER, pet food was created to make it easy for us to feed the pets, not what is best for the pets. AND to make the companies money. What ever short cuts they can take. I have worked for large manufacturing companies and they all focus on recyle. Anything and everything. Byproducts can and do include animal feces that are sanitized. Some include road kill. BLAH

I use Wellness, always seems to get good ratings. Also I checked a while back and the Costco brand dog food had good ratings as well as is relatively cheap. I just moved to Ny and the Costco here only has adult dog food. Once my pup is a year I'll switch over to that.

I was using Iams, but thta started causing my boy to get sick. Switched to Blue Buffalo and that helped but now seems to be causing diarrea again... I guess I'll move to Eukanuba breed specific next...

Another vote for Taste of the Wild. I don't think it was on the petfood analysis site a year ago when I switched, but is on there now as a 5* or so food and my dog has been much better on it. Going to try the Instinct Duck and Turkey as my dog is allergic to just about everything.

We've got a 105 pound Pitbull and a 35 pound Puggle. We feed them both Verus dogfood, either the chicken or lamb mix. It's kinda pricey, but I think it's pretty good, maybe there's a better doggie food out there that costs less?
