    i have a 2002 tundra with 220,000 miles

always ran the cheapest gas - 87 - made it a point to fill up in the ghettos @ the independent Hindu dude

its been a beast. zero probs - updated the brakes to a 2005 early on and had to replace the o2 sensors. Even the stock battery went 190,000. Engine wise - it's prob good for another 200K

realized we were being scammed by chevron and shell early on is my point i guess.
my hindu boy is @ at 1.78 as i type this while the chevron across the street is 2.59

same tanker fills them both up. to each his own. GL

Higher octane = slower burn.... Which can be good for an engine if designed for it.

Something else to consider for this discussion, you may not see the computer adjust to your new tank of gas quickly. It may take a few hundred miles for it to tune in to your change in octane. So if that switch back to 87 makes your truck seem sluggish, it's likely that the timing isn't optimized for the change in fuel.

If the manual says 87, that's what I'd run.

Oh, ethanol has less energy per gallon. Cars that run on pure ethanol generally use much more fuel. So, the more ethanol, the less energy and therefore decreased performance.

    I agree

I`ve only had mine 6 days, drove it to and from work for 4 days straight on 87oct, I only have 12 highway miles out of a 39 mile round trip to and from work and my gas mileage thus far shows 20.5. If I had not gassed on it a few times it would easily be over 21 mpg.

    I will keep running 87oct.

I run 87 in my Taco and have been since day one when I took delivery. The engine is tuned for it, so it's all that is needed. Got an older engine with high mileage, yes higher octane helps to reduce/eliminate knocking/pinging. If you have a newer vehicle that you've proved gains MPG on higher octane, I'm betting the engine's tune is off - not 100% but for the majority.

My input: do what makes you feel good! Going up in octane won't hurt the engine. It's the other way, running lower octane than what manufacturers call for, that can cause problems.

What I'd like to see is the math from those convinced your new engines run better with higher octane. Is the mileage gain offsetting the extra money you're paying at the pump? Don't trust your OBD readers, average out tank mileages to get a more accurate number.

Here's a couple links that offer good input to the conversation...

I am looking forward to see how accurate the OBD is when I fill it up for the first time.

I'll give it a shot if I remember. I have a 400 plus mile one way round trip coming up. Ill use 91 on the way there and while im there and 87 on the way back and see what milage I get per tank.

No it doesn't. Octane rating has nothing to do with detergent packages. Detergents are what clean your system. Many years ago only premium gasoline had the additives packages with good detergents. Now all major brand gasoline and all grades have it. See the "with Techron" label on the 87 pump? That's the additives including intake cleaning detergents. Same stuff you can buy in a bottle of fuel injector cleaner.

Again no. The 2GR-FKS 3.5L V6 is designed to run under all conditions on 87 octane gasoline without detonation. So if 87 doesn't make it knock, 93 won't make it knock either. 93 doesn't reduce knocking because there is already zero knocking with 87.

I'm going to assume you mean it's bad to fill up when the gas truck is filling the underground tanks. That is true. When they fill the tanks they do stir up sediment that is more likely to be picked up and put into your fuel tank. When you see the gasoline tanker, go to another gas station.

87 octane is generally the lowest they go in most places. Maybe the ODD 85..? I don't recall ever seeing anything lower, your chances of running into 85 are pretty slim.

Any gas storage tank, metal or plastic, in use now has sophisticated leak monitoring, or it isn't in use. I have seen inside older tanks as they were taken out of service. Never saw any sludge in the bottom.

My first tank was filled by dealer, probably with 87. I did read manual suggest 87, but I decided to fill with 89. Filled up with 89 twice now, I'm not big on following MPG's nor do I really care, I just noticed it drives smoother. I have about 850miles and averaging 22mpg a tank. I drive it like I would any car, no baby'n the throttle just drive. I also noticed by not baby'n the "break in" I don't have this laggy transmission that everyone has been talking about, truck responds as I expect it to. Is it the gas... maybe, is it my driving style... could be. Just drive and enjoy your new Truck and as long as you don't put under the recommended 87 you'll be fine.

    http://www.exploringoverland.com/overland-tech-travel/2015/8/20/the-new-tacomas-new-engine

..."At low speeds, the system can combine both injectors or use one, as needed, to provide stable cold starts, prompt response, and low emissions. At high speeds and high loads, the system switches to direct injection: Each cylinder is equipped with an extremely high-pressure injector that sprays atomized fuel in a horizontal fan-shaped pattern into the combustion chamber after the piston has begun its compression stroke. This promotes a complete burn, reduces detonation, and cools the intake charge, enabling a very high 11.8:1 compression ratio while retaining the ability to run on regular gas—thank you Toyota! (Direct injection is promoted as the latest in high-tech engine wizardry; in fact the 1954 Mercedes-Benz 300SL had it, albeit with mechanical rather than electronic control.)"

Use what the manual says to use, which is regular 87. Using anything more isn't going to give you any benefit when it's meant to run on 87.

but bro civics are fast bro.

on another note...running a high octane has been known to cause issues with some vehicles because it burns hotter or has more ethanol than the injectors are supposed to have and it clogs them up or burns them.
Just some food for thought when at the pump.

I'd go with the regular for 2 tanks and every 3rd tank fill up with premium to help burn off the extra carbon
