My truck runs best on sweat from my minions, especially the female ones.
Takes longer to collect but it's worth it for the enhanced performance and better mileage.

Page 579 of manual. 87 or higher. "Toyota strongly recommends the use of Top Tier Detergent gasoline". List of brands meeting that can be found at www.toptiergas.com
If you think it gives you better performance/MPG and don't have a problem with $$. And it gives you a warm fuzzy feeling use a higher octane.

The only ethanol free fuel I can get is 91 octane. I am torn between it or the ethanol added 87 or 89. Being someone who has run 2 stroke carbureted outboards my whole life, I loathe ethanol. Even though modern fuel injected cars are designed to run fine on that crap I still have a hard time pressing the "10% ethanol" button on the pump when there is the "ethanol free" button right next to it. Middle class problems!

I do get far better mpg with premium gas but it's mostly due to the fact that it doesn't have that crap ethanol in it. Wish it wasn't in any gas. Here's a trip I took doing all interstate driving at 75-80mph in rolling hills.

I thought elevation effect octane rating so I use 93 octane offset the changes. So what if the ecu in the car cant prevent knock so 93 octane come in handy. Shell 93 have nitro, 89, 87 dosent. Nitro suppose to clean the valves.
Oh, man, Im so mental now. I cant stop thinking that Shell V Power 93 make my tacos cleaner and more powerful. Everytime my truck is 3/4 full and not busy and I see a shell station, I pull in for a fill up. Damn, you Shell commercial.

Agree. It really help me a lot with the clattering noise of the engine and improved the MPG, too.

I seem to have a nasty clatter when cruising at low rpm's, then hit the throttle to go up an incline, tran switches to a lower gear and rpm's jump. My engine sounds like it's got monkeys playing metal morroccas. I've started using higher octane fuel and it stopped happening.

    Wtf?

It seems that it is happen with my truck too. After almost 13k miles on the odometer, using 87 octane gas (and "up to" 10% ethanol :(), and hearing the "normal" clattering engine frequently (this is maybe the only thing in this truck that really annoys me); I switched to 91 octane just to see how the engine performs. After filled up, for the first 20 miles it was the same, but after that, the engine runs a lot smoother (almost not clattering at all) and I noted a significant increase of MPG going 16-17 to 18.5-19. The difference is also noted in more responsiveness of the truck. I will try with 89 too, in order to find the sweet spot, but definitely with the current gas prices the switch to higher octanes is worth the little extra cost.
I'm wondering -and It will be difficult (if not impossible here in Tx)- to find a gas station with 93 oct and no ethanol added, just to see how this engine will perform.

93 because of better mpg and the truck runs stronger.

I wonder if the OV tune is getting good reviews just because people need to run 93 :notsure:

2nd Gen 4.0, I tried using mid-grade but would get some spark knock when putting my foot into it. Have to use top grade, here in AZ I think it is 91 octane.

Lol don't get upset, you are probably getting better .
I use 87 and get great mpg in my opinion.
My 69 Camaro SS uses high octane but it's a high performance motor. Sadly the taco is not ...at least till the warranty is out!!

But I'm willing to give the taco a couple tanks of premium just to see :) will report back.
