What kind of roof crossbar would work on a gen 2 for kayak transport?

I just bought this 16.5 ft ocean kayak, way longer than my 10 ft rec kayaks that I throw in the bed. The guy I bought it from had a t-bar in the hitch similar to this one in the link, but his gen 3 Tacoma had rails on the cab hood and he had a crossbar attached. I will probably get this t- bar, unless someone has suggestions for another solution. As you can see in my photo I have no rails. What is under those rubber tracks on the roof? Are they anchor points? Suggestions of what will fit on my gen 2 roof?

Incidentally, this will be a good solution for my extension ladder when I go work on the rental property too, so looking forward to a good setup.

A little pricey, but the thule xsporter would suit your needs.

Thanks. That looks nice, but I am removing my soft tonneau and replacing it with a hard cover. I think I need a crossbar on the roof.

Here’s mine with Yakima crossbars. You can use #24 landing pads like I did or get the mounts that click onto the doors. It works great with kayaks.

I went with this solution because the Yakima bars are removable and I drive most of the time without them on.

Other people have had success with Prinsu, etc.

Get a Yakima Overhaul rack on a tonneau cover with tracks. The rack itself is height adjustable

I like that and it would suit me well in conjunction with that trailer hitch bed extender because I could just throw them on for the occasions I am hauling the kayaks, or ladders, and take both the crossbars and the hitch extender off when not. I have a 2006 and I see you have a 2022. Do you know if your, or my roof, is a naked roof, fixed point roof or has tracks? I haven't looked under those rubber pieces but I am thinking it is a naked roof and the rubber is there just to cushion any aftermarket rack towers? How were you able to secure your towers without the door clips?

I’m less familiar with the 2nd Gen, but on the 3rd Gen there are pre-drilled holes for attaching a roof rack underneath the rubber weather stripping. I assume the same is true for the 2nd Gen, not least because the OEM roof rack between the generations is the same.

I did just notice, however, that you have an access cab and that will limit your options somewhat. I think the AC doesn’t have the mount points the DC does. I put in a 2006 AC on Yakima’s and it looks like the only things that work are the systems that clip in beneath the doors. I’m sure the same would be true of Thule and other manufacturers.

That said, I’ve seen other people on these sites use the clip in system and it seems to work well. And of course you can take it off when you’re not using it.

Yes, I came up with the same result. Strangely, I cannot add it to the cart. I am now on the Rhino Rack webpage and looking at their solution as well, recommended by Top Taco above. It would be nice to get one crossbar instead of a kit of two, as that is all I need.

If you're just looking for a single bar. Just grab one of the style that clamps onto the door jamb. Rhino, Thule, Yakima all make them. Pop it off when you don't need it.

I will look again but it looks like they are only sold in pairs

You should be able to purchase single components.

Excellent write-up. I would love to do this, even if its a bit overkill. Doesn't look to hard and I have no problem drilling and riveting in the gutter. I have an access cab and seems the Rhino-Rack website says not available. I also read in another thread you can get the DC kit and cut it down to size. Any thoughts on that?

On another note, as you can see in my original photo, my license plate covers the trailer hitch receiver on my aftermarket offroad bumper. Any recommendation on a hinged plate holder so I don't have to unscrew it each time? I am also wondering if Louisiana or most state allow you to get a spare license plate to attach to accessories like that Yakima bed extender or bike racks that go into the hitch receiver? I have been pulled over twice for my license plate not being displayed properly when the hitch was in use. One time it was clearly in the back window but the cop said it draws suspicion for people with stolen plates or looking to commit crimes that it could be easily removed. I know Thule makes a plate holder for bike racks, but don't know if I can get a second plate for that. Just a general PITA.

Once the tracks are installed, you don't have to use rhino crossbars. You can use thule or yakima too. I used yakima crossbars on mine when I had it.

I did find single crossbar options. They only show pairs on their website but if you call them they give you part numbers. I would up going all Yakima because they have a big sale with free shipping. Also Rhino Rack hitch mount bed extenders have been out of stock for about a year. They said they have no track option for access cab Tacoma's. I mentioned cutting it to size and they said it would void warranty and wouldn't comment on it.
