    Countless discussions on this issue.

    Wrap two(2) #20 hose clamps around the lift point on right rear - passenger side. This will stop most parking lot thefts. If you live in a bad area, nothing is going to save your gate as they'll have all night to work on it.

    Really only option is a pop and lock.

    Those things are hit or miss, some have luck others say they junk.

    Really my main thing is wanting to lock the gate so people can't get in it. I have a Tono and want the lock to be a deterrent if I want to have tools and stuff back there

    Bought a Pop-n-Lock. It managed to quit working after two months.

    I sure wish there were better options

    I have a Pop n lock
    It's the model that uses a key (not electric) and when you install it you can use your normal ignition key.
    Not real robust but if you'er gentle it works.

    I also have a tonneau cover and added a tailgate lock to secure my gear in the bed of my taco.

    At first, I went with the Pop & Lock PL5400 Black Manual Tailgate Lock with BOLT Codeable Technology for Toyota Tacoma
    <https://www.amazon.com/Pop-Lock-PL5...69647531&sr=8-1&keywords=pop+and+lock+tacoma>

    And then I got annoyed with having to turn off my engine to open up the tailgate, so I added the Pop & Lock PL8525 Power Tailgate Lock for Toyota Tacoma (Power Lock Add-on Kit)
    <https://www.amazon.com/Pop-Lock-PL8...s=pop+and+lock+for+toyota+tacoma+-+2005-2015>

    If I had known better, I would have gone straight with this:
    Pop & Lock PL8521 Power Tailgate Lock for 05-12 Toyota Tacoma
    <https://www.amazon.com/Pop-Lock-PL8...p+and+lock+for+toyota+tacoma+2005-2015+elect>

    or better yet this one:
    Pop & Lock PL8540 Tailgate Lock
    <https://smile.amazon.com/Pop-Lock-P...p+and+lock+for+toyota+tacoma+2005-2015+elect>

    I also recommend the Pop & Lock PL8540. The mechanism behind the handle broke on my first installation but P&L stood by the product and overnighted a new one to me without a lot of questions. No problems since then (over a year) and the way it works with my factory FOB and ignition key make it worth the price (IMHO). The handle is not as solid as the OEM handle but otherwise it is a good mod as I often store valuable stuff in my bed under a BAK Roll-X tonneau cover.

    I've had my Pop & Lock PL8540 Tailgate Lock in for a year...had it installed when they put on the canopy after buying it new. Other than being noisy and having to unlock the Passenger door to get it unlocked I am very happy with it. I have also used the key a few times and have no problems. Only wish it had come standard equip along with Heated Mirrors.

    What's the difference from the 8521 and the 8540?

    8521 is the lock actuator with wiring that goes inside the tailgate. It keeps the oem tailgate handle from opening. The 8540, I think, also comes with a tailgate handle with key lock. Ive had the 8521 for years without issue. Plus you use the factory tailgate handle, which is much nicer than aftermarket handles.

    But the only thing I would be worried about is not being able to get it unlocked if there was a malfunction. If it messes up with the aftermarket handle you can use the key lock

    I dont worry about this because I know how to open my tonneau even if the tailgate is closed. The tailgate access panel can be removed in the closed position.
