I am trying to figure out what years and models (cab sizes) come with manual transmission and shifter for 4x4. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I don't believe that Double cabs were offered with manuals until the second generation.

I believe that all the 2nd gens have the knob for 4x4 and no shifter available even as an option. Crawler box and FJC case swaps have been done plenty of time though.

Every model had a 4x4 and manual transmission option. Also, every 4wd model has a transfer case shifter for high to low gear. Some of them have the manual 2wd/4wd J shifters but that was slowly phased out and replaced by an electronic push button 4wd (button located on the t-case shifter).

I have a friend that has a 1st Gen Tacoma (2001 to be exact) and his transfer case does not have the manual shifter—he has the electronic push button to switch to 4 wheel drive.
With that said, I was/am still under the impression that 2000 was the last year for the manual 4x4 shifter.

I could be wrong though

It does however, in order to engage the 4 wheel drive system he has an electronic button that he pushes.
In my 2000 Taco, my system is completely manual.

I probably should have been more clear in my original post...he does have a high/low shifter but with an electronic button to engage the system.

ALL 1st gens (1995.5-2004) had manual 4x4 shifters. Some had a button on the manual shift lever to switch into 4hi, but had to be manually shifted into 4lo. This was a factory option and most 1st gens had the full manual 4x4 shifter (J-shifter).

All 1st gens had the option of a 5 speed manual with the exception of the double cab v6. There are a few double cab 4 cylinders out there with factory 5 speeds.

Single and ext cab were offered with a manual transmission. Double cabs are all autos unless you swap a 5 speed in yourself. Some have a j shifter and some have push button 4wd but you still have to manually shift for 4 lo even with push button.
