I'd have to say wolfs head motor oil. Haven't use it since the 70's.

In the early 1980s we pulled the intake manifold off my friends 1972 350 Pontiac Ventura. The amount of thick oil sludge in that engine was just way out there crazy. Seriously, it was absurd. It had been an all Pennzoil engine.

The old school saying was never use a brand of oil that used Pennsylvania crude oil. Pennzoil and Quaker State being big no nos. The saying was, right or wrong, Pennsylvania based oils are very waxy and sludge your engine really bad.

If indeed this was valid, I assume it no longer applies with synthetic oil. But I still to this day avoid Pennzoil and Quaker State. Old timer mechanics back in the 1980s drilled this into my lil’ brain.

I just pick the cheapest API SN+ available. Amazon had a ridiculous deal for 0w20 valvoline for $14.21 for 6 quarts. Several of us on the MT Tacoma FB page jumped on that before the deal disappeared. I’ll be using it for the next several thousand miles:)

the only oil I’ve left behind was Valvoline VR1 for my Opels. That stuff was thicker than molasses at 32°F and thinner than water at 180°F.
I use redline in my Opels now it is actually the advertised viscosity at all temps.

Stock wheels and suspension. Random "utilitarian" mods featured on this great forum.
You really think their base stock actually comes from Pennsylvania? Pennzoil is owned by Shell; I doubt any of it has originated in PA for a long time now.

Go figure for the 1970s and 1980s. These were now long dead old mechanics talking about a sludged to holy hell Pontiac engine. Do I really think? Yeah okay look at you. Are you getting me all straightened out on the matter?

You’re right about the sludge. We rebuilt a couple of engines back in the early 70s that had been running Quaker State, totally sludged up. Never used it since then though now it’s supposedly a decent oil. Saw an article about it somewhere. Ignore the Millies they’re clueless of history lol.

I just switched tonight from Pennzoil Platinum 0W-20 to Amazon Basics full synthetic 0W-20. Read good things about it, and it was cheaper than the Pennzoil.

Delco 15W-40 heavy duty diesel oil. She's got all the vitamins and has got red, white, and blue. Plus, most importantly, she was the cheapest.

In my early years of wrenchin, every time I worked on an engine that had used Pennzoil, it was F-ed up big time. So for 30 years I would never run Pennzoil or Fram filters.

Today I've found PUP to be the best Synthetic(group III plus) for the money. Most everything else is Group III, and if you want Group IV/V, you'll pay thru the nose.

I also like the Fram Ultra guard filter for the Tacoma.
