you obviously havent owned a drz. i put 10k miles on mine when i owned with thousands of those miles being on the highway doing 70. i rode that bike 3+ hr trips strictly on the highway. cruises perfectly fine.
drz does fine with stock gearing

dirt trim drz isnt that short. at 260lbs most bikes should be resprung anyways since they are usually suited for lighter riders. typically stock bikes are 200lb riders or less.

Another bike you might want to look into is the Suzuki DR650. They're ultra simple, reliable and can handle the freeway decently once you get a softer seat and a windscreen. They've been around for ages (the design hasn't changed since 1996 ) so there's a lot of aftermarket support and parts are easy to come by.

Go with the KLR. I ride a DRZ400S to work, 5 mile stretch of highway and it's doable, definitely not bad but not comfortable either. At ~70 the front end is very light, 80 is literally as fast as it'll go and only on a cool morning haha. The KLR can cruise better and with the extra weight stays more stable at speed.

Edit: love the drz, great bike! But that long fast highway section would be more comfortable on the KLR. Dirt section of course better on the drz.

I’ve rode bikes on the highway that would only do the speed limit and it’s not a fun thing to do, you really want a bike that can move when it needs to move.

True that! I used to commute to work/school with a Honda Rebel 250 that would do about 60 mph pinned in full tuck. It was scary because it was so slow that you couldnt power out of a situation if you needed too. 72 mpg was nice but riding at a snail's pace was lame haha

I used to haul a Trail 90 sometimes when working off-road to drive up washed out backroads where my Taco couldn’t go -it’s a Mtn goat with 4 high and 4 low compound gears. I also used it to commute occasionally on nice days to another job in a rural part of town, and it could even do 50mph :). I still take mine as a fun around camp driving bike, but I guess it’s not really what you were asking for, but dang, almost everyone had one at one time or another and they are fun to ride. And, they don’t cost much in good condition, even on EBay.

If you think the DRZ is short, you'd laugh at how low both of my bikes are. My CRF250L and FZ07 seat heights are like 32". I can't even balance on a DRZ400SM because it's too tall... :anonymous:

Damn! Change the sprockets or anything? Stock gearing on the S trim I'm wide open 5th gear to hit 80 up and over the bars to keep the front end tracking with knobbies.

no stock sm gearing which is 15-41. and i mean i could cruise at 100 if i really wanted to. about 110 was the highest i got it up to.

do you have yours rejetted? cause that will make a tremendous difference. get the jd jet kit if not.

knobbies in general are a little sketch at that high speed anyways. if you had a more pavement oriented tire it would track better. my 690 has the same issue, but i plan to go to something like the mefo super explorers.

Get the KLR. They never quit and when you get bored of commuting you can do the TAT on it
