I own a 08 SVn, Love it. Obviously I am biased, however here are my reasons for recommending it.

    1. You know what maintenance schedules are like on a japanese bike (duc has more, buell i dont know, i think less actually)
    2. buell went out of business, right now parts are still easy to come by as is service...down the road, resale value and parts availiblity is in question
    3. huge aftermarket following for sv's - svrider.com

have you looked into yamaha fzr at all? fun but really comfy bike. the sv650's are a very capable bike in the right hands. Theres guys at track days slaying on those things. ducati's not worth it. i know nothing about the buell. the speed triple is a good bike, but probably no more comfortable than the gsxr. the gsxr has a more comfy riding position already than some other bikes out there ie. yamaha r6/r1. just my humble thoughts on the matter. good luck!

Oh this is a tough one.
I had a monster, loved it, but needed something bigger.
I've always like the SV though. Looks just as good as the monster to me.
And yes Ducatis have slightly higher maintaince costs but for me it was worth it not to be riding the same thing as everyone else plus the sound when you make them scream is f**king addictive!

If you decided on the monster, I would look for a 2005+ S2R 1000
    with the single sided swingarm.

I owned the first year model of this bike and I loved it. I rode this bike regularly from Dallas to Amarillo and it was quite comfortable on long rides. Its a cheap bike and bulletproof. May want to check this out
Out of your choices I voted for the ducati, as I have only ridden that one out of the ones you have listed. As others have said you may want to check maintenence schedules and know that a new gas tank costs I think somewhere around 400.00 and is plastic.

He said he wanted something for longer rides. Although the V-Max is a crazy awesome bike, the fuel range on those things is attrocious. I read an article where the reviewer was getting 85-90 miles per tank. Not your ideal touring bike. They are fun play things/dream bikes that no one buys due to price.

I'd be going something Triumph. If I wanted a cafe style bike, Thruxton. Naked, Street Triple. Sport, Daytona.

    All 3 are absolutely gorgeous.

I'd go with an SV simply because they're gonna be plentiful and parts will NOT be hard to find. You'll also be able to cross over parts if necessary. Buell and Ducati aren't gonna be the best bet in the long run. I have a 93 Katana and I can cross over parts from a gsxr, swap in a b1200 inside a 600 frame, swap in sv650 parts, just about anything. right now i have a 98 motor in there. If i could ever find a bandit 1200 motor i'm there. I would still pay insurance for a 600 though:cool:

Get the SV proven track bike. Take a ride on it, i'm sure you'll end up loving. Nuff said

x2. The SV is a neat little bike. They are durable, inexpensive, and they are actually a pretty decent little track bike, for a lightweight. Parts are incredibly plentiful, and, with some minimal modifications, you can use many GSXR parts in place of SV parts. They make a 600 and a 1000 version, so that should quench your tastes for a bit more power.

Ducati is expensive, and, speaking at least from the racing world, they never work right. I know lots of people who race ducati's, and I know lots of people who are pushing them past the finish line on a regular basis. Parts for a ducati are incredibly expensive. Everybody thinks that ducati is the worlds greatest, fastest bike, blah blah blah -- but...personally, ugh.

400.00 for a tank is pretty much standard, no matter what bike you're on. Motorcycle plastics in general are extremely expensive. The price goes up with Ducati, because of the name. Cheap plastics and tanks can be had on ebay, just don't buy any of the hong kong crap before you check around on forums and see who's tried them before, some of those things have serious fitment issues.

Most of all... buy my GSXR.

Haha, I already have a GSXR! I don't like them for long trips, plus I don't like the gf complying the whole time that the back seat is so damn small.

I'm leaning more towards the SV because it is probably more reliable than the other bikes. As soon as I sell the GSXR I'll start looking.
