I'll run 87 if i want it to ping. I'll run 93 if I don't want it to ping. Can I get a fancy engineer to comment on why and what i should do about it?

What did Toyota say to use.? When in doubt always read the manuals. Here’s my 06 Tacoma’s owners manual pg 269.

Your engine is not running optimally if it pings on 87 octane.

Looks to me like Toyota says run a higher number. Am I reading this wrong? Let’s not split hairs they say occasional ping is normal but using a higher number will yield better performance.

Let’s convince Toyota to sell diesel tacos in the USA. Eliminating the need for this debate and a good use of all this energy...

alas this still seems like a pipe dream.

If I remember correctly when the 4.0L came out they said to use premium for better performance, 05-06 time frame. People complained so Toyota had to detune the motor or lowered the compression ratio to accommodate 87 octane.

Any documentation to back this up or is this an opinion?

Toyota had never made a truck that required 91 octane. As I have owned one of every generation since 1982. In the current model it says 87 but choose higher if you want better performance. No where does it say to use 91 to start. That is a user choice. Pretty simple actually.

agreed, my 2000 Tacoma had a button to press for more performance. I think it changed the shift points and gave the impression it ran better. My own experience here ? Last few years I get 87 octane at Costco and it works well.
