    Probably he does not....... :D
Low octane fuel is simply distilled (and its not moonshine type distilled), Higher octanes are what you would call man made.
One of the refining processes to get higher octane is to run hydrocarbon base in gas state through special catalyst with addition of hydrogen (simplified version) that means most of impurities stay behind. Whats produced is very clean fuel. Extra pass means extra process instead of simply dumping fuel from the keg like when low octane is produced. Hence why higher octane costs much more than low octane fuel.
On the end amount of energy is the same in both except one is cleaner. For people who put a lot of miles low octane, even dirtier, is most likely not much of the issue, as long as they keep up with oil changes.
EDIT: Anybody can check how clean fuel is, just pour couple cups into glass jar, and leave it closed for a week or so, see how much junk separates.

Are you serious? The only thing higher octane does is slow the combustion burn to prevent detonation. If you don't need higher octane, you're wasting time getting it.

I do need it in the summer, thats what keeps my mileage in 20+ MPG.
In winter I use lower octane because its too cold for Higher octane anyway and truck would waste fuel. Dont care about quality of fuel because winter months are short and engine will get cleanup when I switch to higher octane for the rest of the year.
Thats what I had been doing and it is working for me. Feel free to disagree but I am not planning to change it. Hard to argue with 21 MPG on trips to work with 4x4 DCLB truck.

ummm lets put this way.. the process of getting gas is a complex thing.. it not like distilling moonshine. it don't pass over again. the refinery have a special stack where oil comes in bottom.. with heat to boil.. produce light gases.. which carry up to the next notch what ever the weight of that gases state become grade liquid.. low grade gas.. this process keeps going up the tower to each notch for its weight. the highest is called white gas.
Blue T . I assumed you watched too many moonshine show for your idea of " wash over" to produce gas.
The higher grade gas, better for the truck or car.. just depends how they like to drink it.. thus higher grade do tend to burn slower BUT cleaner and better performance. don't forget that the gas company do add stuff in to make more stable and refined. There is summer grade gas and winter grade gas. the northern states are required to have winter grade gas which is 10% ethahol additive in the gas. this stuff sucks! exspellicaly the lower grade gas. ( this why I used the mid grade during the winter the most).
most of you folks can follow what I am saying.. For blue t.. I guess you need to relearn your education.
have a good day.. I declare this done and case close.

Please don't confuse octane rating with quality of gas. Quality (IMHO) refers to amount of fuel additives present in the gas for deposit control purposes.

Please refer to this page for a decent explanation. http://www.toptiergas.com/
And refer to this list to find 'Top Tier' gas in your area. http://www.toptiergas.com/retailers.html

Octane rating has NOTHING to do with the quality of the gasoline. High octane fuel is made to prevent pre-ignition or detonation in higher compression engines. If you have a supercharger, premium gas is probably required, other than that you're wasting your money if your truck calls for 87 and you're using 89, 91, or 93. You can use premium if it makes you feel warm and fuzzy inside, but it makes absolutely no difference if its not required or recommended.

I also like to pick 83. I always pick 83 because of its intensity. It also suits me a lot so according to me 83 is good.

Everybody has an opinion on this Octane BS ... Try reading up , researching the question before adding an answer you "Think" is fact
If your engine doesn't ping on 63 keep using it ... If it does , move up to a higher octane , like 87-89-91 , these engines(4-V6) we're designed to run on 87 ... Like I said , if your not getting Ping , going to a higher octane is just wasting money.
As far as cost goes , diesel is the first product off the Cracker in the refinery (needs least amount of refining)
So why is it More Expensive ?
Profit -Profit-Profit .... Those big semis are eating up a gazillion gallons of fuel everyday .
Back when the combustion engine first came out , gasoline was the waste product ... They just threw it away !!! Wow ... Talk about pollution in the ground !
Higher octanes are for higher performance engines .... Save money ...go on a date ...or use the savings to get away for fun or another mod : )

    We've got a Conoco around that has 93 non-ethanol
    Gosh, it's freaking expensive... like 50 cents more/gallon than 87 E10

I used it for a little while, but, I kept getting CELs with it
Was probably just too awesome for my truck
