Maybe to you but I used to make a living doing this stuff so it's still interesting to me. Plus I'm a gear head so engines are fun to play with

FYI - Mobil 1 Annual protection (the 20,000 mile oil) has a virgin TBN of 8.

The really good stuff usually doesn’t show on a standard analysis.

    Still thinking about it.
If you use quality oil and change it at the recommended interval.... Then your oil is probably still good and should be put in a Chevy V8 or something for another 5k.

Just kidding but I was actually doing just that thing for awhile. Take the oil from the one I care about and use it in the one that I don't care as much about.

I looked it up I saw 10 TBN

    http://www.pqiadata.org/Mobil1_Annual_Protection_5W30.html

However it seems 7ish is apparently good enough for our engines at 10k

Yes, I read on Bobistheoilguy forum of 10K oil changes using Warren Oil Company oil ie Walmart's Super Tech, Costco, and about 10+ other major chain stores.

I can't really answer that. But as the mechanic of both my vehicles and vehicles of my extended family as well as many friends and neighbors, I've done 100s of OCs over the years. Often times the oil and filter are supplied while other times I provide them with reimbursement. I generally use M1 in my vehicles....
M1 5/30 in my Taco, M1 0/20 in the wife’s Corolla and M1 5/30 HM in my daughter's Yaris....but not exclusively and only when I can get it on sale or with a rebate. I always use either an M1 or a Fram Ultra filter.

With the exception of one of my neighbors who brings me Pennzoil Platinum and a Fram Ultra filter, not one person has EVER cared what oil goes in their vehicle. The ones that provide the supplies show up with whatever the cheapest oil they can find....usually ST....but often times Costco, NAPA, Meijer. And when I provide them they ALWAYS say "whatever is cheapest". So I generally default to ST synthetic or Meijer brand (same Warren produced product) and a Fram TG filter.

My neighbor's '12 Camry has lived exclusively on 0/20 ST synthetic since it's 3rd OC. 8+ years and 160+ miles later the car runs great and consumes virtually no oil between it's 10k mile changes.

We recently sold my FIL's '03 Dodge Dakota with 120k on the clock (he passed away after Christmas). It spent the last decade on ST....8 on ST conventional and the last 2 on ST HM synthetic. The gentlemen who bought it owns a local repair shop. He asked me what oil I had been using in it. When I told him he said, "good. I like that stuff".

BIL's vehicles...'03 Camy - 200k miles, '04 Sienna -150k miles and a '08 Prius - 120k miles. They've all lived exclusively on ST or Meijer...mostly the synthetic HM formula. Zero issues.

Not one time has anyone ever had any kind of oil related issue....out of dozens and dozens of OCs on the cheap stuff.

So I don’t have any scientific evidence. But I have lots of real-world experience.

Thanks yeah I'm used to people using almost anything. My reason for asking was this new generation of cheap synthetics is different. In the old days we had synthetic which always a tier over conventional. However with more group III base oil this new generation is using the conventional additive pack with synthetic base oil... So you get this super cheap alternative. However the old conventional packs we only expected 3k to 5k drains. Now with 10k its good to know they still last 10k.

Though I tend to use only the best stuff just because I like it. It was fun to learn everything that goes into a motor oil.

Yup they are just trucks replaceable and most of us don't keep them long enough to care.

Though I'd rather buy a used truck off a guy that used Mobil 1 in it than Walmart crap any day.

I'd never buy your truck... But that's just my opinion.

i signed up for a 6 month trial for $10, in other words, I bought a coupon for 25% off my order. i used to be on the royal purple bandwagon but projectfarm's youtube series of tests on oils convinced me to switch to amsoil. Is it overkill for 5k OCIs? definitely. do I care? absolutely not.

One of the first things I did is change the oil when I first got my Tacoma last June. What came out was pretty horrific, I should have done the following procedure back then. Even after the oil change it still looked black on the dip stick.

Fast forward 7 months. Last weekend I drained & refilled with new oil leaving the old filter on. I tried to drive it harder this week reving higher before shifting to really get it good and hot.

Then this weekend I did a regular oil change with a new napa gold 1516 filter. I also ran a can of liquid moly 2037 engine flush following the instructions on the can. As with all liquid moly products the little safety cap things need to be cut off since the squeeze here cap won't open otherwise. I let it drain really good to get as much of the old stuff out as possible. I don't know, the dipstick is hard to tell, I put in 5.5 qt of 5/30 mobil one. Anyhow, the end result is absolutely clean oil on the dip stick. I may not have needed to use the flush but I'm happy with the outcome.

The double flush oil change I've done many times, if your oil is super dirty sludge, it will get yours crystal clean.

Added pics of the old smaller micro guard, and new larger Napa gold oil filters

Magic elixirs aren’t needed, all you need is fresh oil and a new filter. 40 plus years aircraft mechanic I’ve seen it all. Synthetic that meets minimum standards or better is all you need. There is no magic in a bottle

Yet some people will continue to spend big money on designer lubes no matter what. It's like politics or religion. People get heated about oil, brands, types intervals, etc. In truth, ANY oil meeting the required specs and changed per the manual is perfectly fine. And so much oil info that people spit out is just woven into their DNA after years and years of listening to the advice of their father and their father's father....nearly all of which has been deemed obsolete by today's oil formulas. It's just perpetually regurgitated.

choosing oil brands is no different from water brands; aquafina, dasani, evian, arrowhead, etc. theyre all the same shit. no need to waste your $ on fiji/voss but whatever makes you happy. you will survive on tap water but thats a different discussion

Pennzoil 5W30 and a standard Fram filter. That's the only oil I've ever used in it, although I've occasionally used a standard Purolator filter. My filter wrench which fits Fram perfectly is too big to grip the Purolator, which is a pain.
