I recently bought a black 2013 Toyota Tacoma 4 door short bed, it's a V6 and it has TRD modifications done to it but looking up the vin number I find it was originally a base model. Obviously it was modified at the dealership it seems before it was given to the original owner because he kept every record of anything done to it including it's very routine service, I bought it from its second owner so I don't have the first owner to ask. It does not have a scoop, it's clearly lifted but not super tall, it has TRD off road suspension, 17 inch TRD rims, and a TRD exhaust that sounds awesome. Is all of that included in any specific package or did he just select what he wanted custom? I'm sorry if it's a dumb question, I've never bought a new truck from a dealership so idk what that's like and if you can select what you want done. I love my truck and was just curious. Thank you for reading :))

    Yeah.
It's possible it is a package that the dealer had installed if it's all TRD parts. The ones I've seen around here usually have a block/spacer lift, possibly the TRD shock upgrade, and larger wheels and tires (usually Method wheels or something). Some might add the exhaust as well. Or, it could be a previous owner just chose those upgrades.

I'm not sure if a VIN lookup would cover a dealer package like that, but it should cover port-installed options.

a weird thing I've seen also is that on some websites/platforms, Tacomas are segregated by "Base" or "Prerunner", then the specific trim/model/version. so "Base" may not necessarily mean what you think, just that it isn't a pre-runner/2x4 version

Thank you all I'll be a bit busy with work, I did look up the vin but would prefer not to give it out as advised by my dad and it does have the rear locker as well as the other off road things like Atrack and it's 4wd. I wouldn't mind if someone had a link to something that has the different vin codes if we know what they mean that may help me figure it out and yes in time I'll have more pictures, just haven't taken too many yet as I spent everything on the truck and I wanna wash it and detail it before spending time taking my super nice pictures. Thank you all once again.

If it has the locker it's 100% a TRD OffRoad, the other stuff was likely added by the dealer or PO.

Oh well that's cool thank you!! Good to know what I've got, I think the rest was probably by request at the dealer due to it being TRD as well and not being stuff I can find was normally included in the off road package

A-Trac is the real indicator in my opinion, I can't imagine anyone with a base model adding that. Better off just putting an ARB locker in front and rear.

Well I think it's pretty cool still, I am sure the two lockers would be better but it does it's job well enough and I'm not gonna do anything too extreme in it, it's got the rear locker at least as well. But yeah I do get that it makes sense if you were to spend all that money why not go all out. Probably was a TRD Off-Road with some extra stuff done to it that he thought was cool

Oh I just mean it has to be an Off-Road edition, you'd be crazy to add A-Trac to the base model (base models don't come with A-Trac).

True true although I don't know the original owner he could've been crazy I mean he gave up this truck, it's wonderful it drives perfectly nothing wrong with it. Although maybe he couldn't afford the payments that were left on it that's also why the second owner sold it but then I payed all that off so I don't have to worry.

You have a trd off road the only other option would have been a pro but they didn’t make those until 2015 and you don’t have a hood scoop so definitely no pro

Pretty similar to the first owner of my truck. Bought it brand new, put 10k of upgrades on it, then traded it in shortly after. Never know why people do the things they do.

What's the interior look like? My understanding is the base models (like mine) have a different fabric and passenger seat type. Someone might have to correct me on that.

Correction, it could be a Baja as well, the only big/noticeable difference of the bajas aside from the decals is the suspension I believe. But most people keep that on there for authenticity.

Isn’t the Baja a port/dealer package and not an actual Toyota factory option

It's a little unclear. It is basically a slightly different OR model, but there were a limited number of Bajas produced, which would imply that it was kind of it's own model/deviation, rather than just a package anyone could put on. at least that's how I understand it.

as i recall, at the time the TRD models were sport, offroad, T/X Pro, and T/X Baja

EDIT: after some further research you maybe right, but I do know there were limited production numbers of the Baja, maybe that was just limited by parts availability, or it was a predetermined order by dealerships, rather than consumers?

Well would a Baja have TRD on the Tailgate?

Also yeah I don't get why someone would get such a nice truck and then even modify it just to trade it in before putting barely any mileage on it while everything's running perfectly

Bajas do have a TRD on the tailgate, but it would be red, so that would be the tell. forgot about that specific lol

as for buying to mod and not drive...some people just like to mod. Possible it was a second vehicle and he didn't want to put too many miles because he knew how they hold their resale. I am somewhat guilty of the same with my truck...spend thousands building it and now it mostly sits on the street parked, but it does get some use for camping/road/offroading trips
