Do you have a multi-meter? If you don't you should. They are cheap and useful.

With one lead on one of the contact points for the headlight plug and the other grounded to body of the truck you can tell positive from negative (with the headlight switch on). You'll get no voltage if the contact in the plug is negative (negative to the truck body (negative) won't flow current). If you are on a positive that's getting power (switched on) with one lead and the body of the truck with the other you'll see 12ish volts.

The problem is you will have to modify the whole setup since the low beam normally shuts off when the high beam is activated. Not sure if anyone has successfully done it... try searching around the forum

1st gens are ground controlled. The head lights are controlled by grounding thru the switch. You will have one wire positive and the other 2 one be an open ground until high beam is selected the other one, will be grounded when low beam is selected. Completely different then a standard setup.
