Other than repairing or replacing a tire, what mechanical or electrical issues were you able to fix or at least temporarily remedy while off-roading?

On a scale of 1-10, I am a 1 when it comes to car repair, so I'd like to learn about some of the issues that are actually fixable while out and about and possibly learn how to do them myself.

Oh this could be interesting. Would like to hear some stories from other people (Im sure theres some gnarly ones)

The only ones I can think of right off for myself are both snow related and pretty minor. Got into a situation early last year where the snow was not only real deep, but also very fine and powdery. Ended up sucking a lot of it in the intake (probably due to my speed :D) Noticed a huge drop in power over the course of a few miles. Figured I could just clean out the filter and keep going. But it kept happening more and more as the snow got deeper. Eventually decided to pull the intake, everything pre filter. Not a huge task, but still takes while to dig all the tools out, dig all the snow out, etc. Unfortunately that didnt help it from also filling up the cabin filter though haha

The other one was new years this year. Wet sticky snow packed up between the gas tank and that stupid little heat shield flap thing, pushing it into the slip yoke boot. After it cut through the boot and semi wrapped around the driveshaft I could hear it. Had to stop and cut/rip the damn thing off. All while snow and dirt and shit is melting off and dripping in my face. Talk about a stupid design..

After almost half a century I don’t have enough time left to write them all down.

My bestest was using a coke bottle (glass) taped to the windshield of my Jeep. With a busted fuel pump I ran a hunk of fuel line down to the carburetor to supply gas. I controlled the flow using a pair of needle nosed vice grips. A big thanks to The Desert Fox and Superpup for that one.

I managed to drive out and then down the highway to an auto parts store. Now I carry a spare fuel pump.

Try that one with fuel injection.

    Buncha shit
Many years ago 3 of us, 2 toyota 4x4's and 1 dog went to volunteer in the pits for BFG, baja 1000, blew head gasket about 350 miles down, near Scamons lagoon (west side baja) had the head surfaced in Santa Rosalita (east side) just happened to find a complete gasket kit, got it all put back together only to have the entire engine seize about 150 miles later on the dirt road to Punta Abre Ojos in the middle of the night, towed by the other toyota to Abre, droped the oil pan, pried out a lower crank bearing, looked like a coors light can that had been in a bonfire.Met a local fisherman he said he had problems with his engine 22re as well and replaced it with an engine from Tijuana,OH REALLY where's yer old one? (million dollar question) leaning against my house! he said, sure as shit all covered up with old rain jackets sitting on some tires there she was, using remaining gaskets from kit after a few days my top half was bolted on his bottom end (sounds funny)with some fine tuning and lots of luck the mighty 22re fired up. The cost/trade was front and rear bumpers, offroad lights, wiring, switches and skidplates ,completely reasonable, ha,no complaints.
After leaving Punta Abre Ojo's against better judgement turned right onto Highway 1 headed South'er towards Cabo San Lucas about 450 miles.
Made it ,hung out a few day's, then back to San Diego, got a rebuilt engine then sold the truck. Never even saw or helped out with any BFG pit stuff, Dang-it. I must say it was quite the adventure, when we weren't wrenchen on the engine in Abre we found plenty of time to fish, surf eat Lobster and hangout with the locals and other Baja travelers.
    Best time ever!
