Based on this thread, you may not need to do any mods at all.

Also, I would go with the same aftermarket wheel as a spare. Mount it with the outside of the wheel facing up--like the way the original spare was mounted from the factory. The only part that will be exposed to damage is the inside of the wheel. If and when it is actually put to use, no one is going to see the rock chips unless they are hanging out under your truck. IMO, this is way better than running the risk of having to swap two tires every time you get a flat.

Just mount a 255/80/17 on your steel spare rim. Essentially same diameter as 285/70/17 but narrow enough that it will clear your oem UCA and you can run it in the front.

Get the matching rim and tire and do a 5-Tire rotation. This is pretty common.

Then you'll have to worry about the spare not having a TPMS. I remember reading that the on board computer only supports 4 sensors so even if you buy a 5th, youll need to reprogram it every time you rotate your tires.

I actually really like @swissrallyman 's idea. Totally thinking outside the box on that one. If I hadn't already purchased a spare tire and wheel, I would go this route to save some cash and to sell my OEM wheels and tires as a complete set.

Good point on the TPMS. Hadn't thought of that.

You actually don't even need to worry about UCA clearance with the steelie. If you blow a front tire, just swap a rear tire up front, and run the spare in the back. Back when I had a family sedan, that's what you were supposed to do with the donut.

I have the t4r trail wheels 17 x 7.5 with +15 offset and 265/70/17 KO2 tires. As soon as I mounted them I bought another 17 x 7.5 +15 Toyota rim and mounted a 265/70/17 KO2 for a spare. That way if I am a long distance from home the spare will not be a handling/rubbing issue on any of the 4 corners. I do carry a compressor and plug kit and, unless a tire is destroyed, I can probably plug, pump and ride without ever needing that spare. Good insurance anyway.

Thank you for everyones replies. I went a full size and matching 5th rim for 350$. My reasoning-if i get a flat i can throw this on and leave it on until i find time to get to tire shop and repair it and not have to roll around looking all fudly. All responses were valid solutions. It will fit no issues in spare and im chopping exhaust after axle so pipe isnt touching tire
