yeah I might get a small loan and I could put gas on a credit card and pay it off at the end of the month which was my original plan

Exactly. The only issue is negotiating a good interest rate. Used car interest rates get jacked up - shop around. Every time you ask for an inquiry into your credit for a loan though, your score gets a ding so if you can ask your personal bank only and try to haggle or have your dad help you out/act as a cosigner.
@OP don't put money on your credit card if you don't have it immediately available. I've made that mistake in the past.

I don’t know if anyone mentioned this but thr OP said one choice was a 2007 for 5k? That sounds like a 5 lug which he won’t be happy with.

IF you go for a loan, which may or may not be a good idea, go to a credit union. Not a dealer loan or a bank.

Regular cab. Half the money. Just as reliable. Besides regular cabs are cool.

Uh Oh, looks like you are already trying to justify a loan & a credit card payment. Kind'f sounds like most 18 yr. olds, that eventually find themselves in a pinch. I dunno, may be a good idea.

Don’t go in debt for a car at 18.

I've had nothing but regular cab trucks and never regretted any of them. But your best move is to get a truck you can afford without getting a loan at this point. You have your whole life to go into debt but if you do get a loan, make sure you are in a position to make the monthly payments so you start building good credit. I doubt anyone will do a reasonable loan on a truck that old with high mileage. Regular cabs are better for towing and easier to maneuver and park. ;)

No Troy, you don't know my wife. If she's around, you don't have the opportunity to decide.

Go for an the access cab
    • Not as long as a double, better maneuverability in parking lots, parallel parking, rush hour, cramped city streets, curvy trails, ect
    • Your probably not married or have kids so you don't need a full row of extra seats
    • Access does offer some extra space over a regular cab for things that need to be in the cab and not the bed (e.g. a TV, PC, glassware)
    • There is seating for 4. albeit not the most comfortable, but if you think your going to be hauling people that often at your age you should get a sedan.
    • Going against the grain apparently, a loan is actually very beneficial if you know you can manage it. Building your cteadit is very important, especially if you plan on buying a house in the future or renting a nice apartment. It also helps save money to have good credit because your intrest rates would be lower than if you don't have good credit.

I've been driving a regular cab for more than 10 years and there are times I wish had an access cab, but five grand for a 4x4 RC is a steal in my opinion!

    Hmm . . . none as yet, that's why i'm here . . .
Given the issues a 2005 are known for i'd stay away.
2007, get a six lugger. Access cab is best.

I learned to drive in snow in Ohio with a RWD Ranger. I'm a better driver because of that and the front wheel drive cars I went through before getting 4x4.

Also, insurance will be more expensive with a 4x4 until you get married and turn 35.

Also, you should be able to get every dollar you spend to buy the regular cab back out of it if you sell it. It has pretty much fully depreciated unless you crash it.

Phooey on using car loans to build credit! You can build that same credit by using credit cards and paying your balance off each month without paying any interest. Don’t give the banks a penny unless you really need to.

For snow definitely, but my vote was more off-road related, that said I still like no debt

Wait a minute, If you give the bank interest, just so they will give you a good credit score, Shoot, that's a "Quid-Pro-Quo" ain't it???

It depends on what you use your truck for. I’m really into outdoors stuff, and one year we went about 9 hours from home to a park and just brought tents. One night there was a rain storm so me and my girlfriend had to sleep in my regular cab ranger. I slept sitting up and she slept across. After that I knew I needed the space.
