For what is put in the truck $28k isn't bad, but budget for new engine. Buy for $28k, I'd personally put $15k into it, new engine, NAV, AV, 2005-2012 front swap, then ready to roll. IF YOU ONLY HAVE $32k, although it's a beautiful work of art, I wouldn't touch it if were you, in your current situation. If you have the budget set aside for new engine, and not worried about creature comforts, then you could get away with purchase price plus $4,000, you do the labor.

Personally, my opinion, that truck is damn near perfect, except the head gaskets are going to fail at some point. Could be today or in 2020, buts its gonna happen. Again, for the right price, I would absolutely freaking buy it! I just don't think it's really what you want to be getting into right now.

To the member who owns the truck, that is a damn near perfect build, but it's based on a 2005. I'm not knocking your truck, I fell victim to the head gaskets too! Almost $100,000 in the truck and find out it shipped with faulty head gaskets! Your asking a completely fair price, just don't think the truck would be a good fit for the OP in his current situation.

FWIW mine is a ‘14 double cab with 36.5k miles 4x4 and well within your budget. I understand the wheels and tires might be a turn off but that’s an easy fix.

The reason i don't want a 3rd gen is because of the hunting for gears and how much it would depreciate.

Curious why you think it will depreciate more than others? They are holding REALLY well where I live.

Do you have $32,000 cash on hand? If yes, you should really invest a portion of it. I guarantee you'll be as or more happy in a $20-25k truck as you will be in a $32k truck.
Are you planning to finance the $32k? If yes, that's not your budget, that's your possible debt load. These are VERY different things, and taking on $32k in debt, at 24, for an item that doesn't appreciate, would be an error in judgement. IMO, FWIW, YMMV, ROTFL, FML.

So in summary- buy 2/3 the truck, be 2x as happy. Seems counter-intuitive, but it be true.

I absolutely LOVE my '08 access cab. Many people view having a full double cab as more desirable, and perhaps it is, for THEIR needs. Me? I like having a 6' bed, if you're wanting to "overland"it makes it more usable for dirtbag camping in the back of it, should you ever want to do that. I also don't really have the need for more than one person to ride with me all that often, and when I do, the little jumpseats are adequate enough for quick jaunts. Worst case, next time your friends would rather ride in someone else's vehicle. I will say that one drawback is the access cab isn't that common, and accordingly the availability of used camper shells is greatly outnumbered by those that fit the shorter bed. Yes, you can find a double cab with a 6' bed, though they aren't nearly as common as the 5' bed. Also, dont sweat getting an automatic transmission; this is the first one I've ever owned out of a handful of vehicles, and it's nice to not fool with shifting(I spend alot of time in stop/go, downtown type traffic).

as with anything, when you ask this sort of question, the responses you typically get are people projecting their own buying priorities on to you (not to be confused with general advice about mechanical issues, etc). This is not the correct way to purchase a vehicle. You need to take a look at your own life, lifestyle, preferences, etc and purchase accordingly.

The only thing i would change would be tires with 17" wheels and get a soft topper with abed cage and a rtt.

Wouldn't a 2nd gen tacoma on 35s with 5.29 gears get the same gas mileage? That means that if i buy a cheap but reliable car under 5k i could use this as a overland/ weekend offroad vehicle.

I’d be willing to do mine for $25k. ‘14 4x4 extra cab short bed, t force package with 36k miles. I understand not being a fan of the wheels, I honestly wish I would have got smaller wheels and more sidewall. You can, however, make decent money back by selling the wheels that are on it.

Just out of curiosity how does your tacoma feel on the street, is it hard, soft, or in between. What kind of gas mileage do you get?

Yeah, those ideas mean a little bit of several things and not very good at anything.

"sort of"? Either it is or it isn't. And it's a truck, not a car.

Maybe start off with a Corolla?
