I'd say go for the 2nd gen, i like my first gen but it feels dated. I also vote for getting the extended cab if you can so you can store junk or keep necessities dry during a storm.

@ZRTX ,I say wait and look for a truck from the Southwest. Texas, Arizona, New Mexico, Utah. Your more likely to find a rust free truck, and get an extended cab or double cab, you'll thank yourself in the long run. I really like my 03 DC, but there are times, I wish I'd have purchased an 06-08 2nd gen DC. I just wasn't sure about the longevity of the newer trucks, when I knew these 1st gens with regular maintenance would last for years.

I was wondering about a 2wd access cab to solid axle swap using the rock slayer offroad buggy killer kit but I now have a question double cab short bed or access cab short bed?

@ZRTX , do you have kids, a dog, go hunting or fishing. Maybe take buddies along. Go for a DC, it's worth the extra room and 2 extra doors. If your looking at a 1st gen, big people will not be comfortable in the back seats. A 2nd gen DC, will have more room in the back seats, and you won't have to worry about lower ball joints. Just my 2 cents worth.

    I enjoyed my 97 single cab 4cyl 5 speed, I paid $3700 for it 8 years.
I don’t know that I’d spend 8k for a single cab even with it being a V6. I couldn’t wait to get an extended cab, absolutely no space at all in the single cabs and the seat only adjust so much.

I’ll tip the scales in favor of 2nd gen! I used to own a 5 spd 1st gen 4x4 reg cab 4 cyl. It was an AMAZING little truck, I loved that thing! Off-road and around town it was great. But any prolonged distance on the highway was not that great, felt squirmy and was uncomfortable, like it didn’t belong there. 2nd gen on the highway is much better, I actually enjoy driving it on 15+ hour road trips. And all around it suits my current needs better. If I didn’t drive highway so often I would go back to 1st gen tbh.

Cliff notes version: do you highway? 2nd gen. Do you not highway? 1st gen. Thanks for coming to my Ted Talk.

It's a tough decision to make, but I'd seriously consider the 2nd gen, and I'm a first gen guy. But if you look at the improvements with the 2nd gen, more horsepower if a V6 engine, don't have to worry about lower ball joint failure, and I'm pretty sure there will be more leg room and more comfortable seats. I truly hate my 1st gen bucket seats. If you ever plan a long road trip, your Ass will thank you for the improved and more padded seats, so please all U 1st gens don't shit storm me, remember I'm a 1st gen guy, but the 2nd gens have their merits also.

I have to agree with the seat ASSessment regarding the Gen1...I was hoping to fix the lousy seat with new OEM seat cushions but Toyota has discontinued those seat pads :(

Which BTW is an interesting point of interest...as the Gen1's get into the quarter century mark Toyota will cut back more and more on the new replacement parts offered.
