Doesn't work that way. The Judge Judy producers pick from small claims court cases that have already been filed, then contact the litigants and offer to settle their claims via arbitration (which is why the show's decisions are legally binding on the participants - they sign arbitration agreements) on the show with Judge Judy as the arbitrator. You don't contact them to settle your dispute. Also, investigative reporters usually investigate a business when they see a pattern or the offense is totally egregious. A car salesperson being less than honest is hardly big news, assuming this is something other than a mistake.

If this were a Ford, I'd be upset, but it's a Toyota. If you get to 100k trouble free, you'll easily get 200k more miles.

That warranty has BIG TIME saved my ass in the distant past, so, unlike you i guess, im deeply "attached" to a long extended warranty

yes yes, im not gonna "go batshit crazy" .....im waiting to hear back after many calls to see how they 'fix it' for me.

I hope the original weasel gets fired ,.....if i did that, and called 3 times about it, and never got called back as promised, id BE FIRED ......

The ONE THING that really pisses me off is when people do things that I MYSELF would 100% be fired for if I had done that to my customers. :(

    OP-

I totally get it that you feel like you’ve been lied to. It’s possible that they had bad intentions to begin with, but it does make sense to me that that simply made a mistake. There’s too much accountability to Corp Toyota unless they were planning on closing their doors soon. My advise to you is give them a chance to make things right, keep a cool/calm head and DONT threaten to sue them. A threat of litigation will stop any progress and you’ll get absolutely nowhere. If it’s bad enough that you end up having to go a legal route then just do it and certainly don’t advertise your intentions to them. I agree with you that $1700 is a lot of money but it’s highly doubtful that they’re intentionally trying to screw you over for that small amount of money. Hope that it gets resolved for you and quickly.

just a little fuel for the fire:
if you have an arbitration clause in effect, you won't get to small claims court as some have suggested.
Beware the the defendant does not have to participate in small claims court and can insist on a jury trial, to be an utter and absolute dick.
if that happens, you will need an attorney. $$$$ which you could very likely recover as well as punitive damages if things really are
as slam dunk as you claim. Hella hassle though...but know small claims requires both parties to agree to waive their right to a jury trial.

Warranties are the biggest cash cow of the auto industry. You’re literally putting that money (which $1700 is a lot to you and me) upfront and betting against your truck with it... and now your best case scenario with this is that your truck will need MORE repairs than the $1700 you just pre-paid. Just because it worked out good for you once in the distant past, doesn’t mean that the vast majority of people don’t still lose the money they spent on their extended warranties. People win sometimes in Vegas too, but A LOT more people lose! My dad used to say, “They didn’t build those gigantic beautiful hotels and casinos by not winning the vast majority of the time”!

Auto makers and dealerships know the odds are way in their favor. That’s why they push sooooo hard to get everyone to buy ext. warranties before they leave with thier new car! Obviously you can do whatever you want with your money, but if $1700 is really a lot to you, then maybe consider saving that shit... and when your new truck rolls past 144K without any major issues (which is far more often than not with a Toyota truck), go out and buy something nice with that money you didn’t throw away. Or not, what do I care?

When I'm looking for legal advice the first place I head is a truck forum on the World Wide Web. When trying to figure out why my Taco vibrates a bit when stopping I head to Legal Zoom ;-)

wise. dealerships are not giving away money. If they want to sell it to you, it is a bad deal (for you). they work the numbers and hope you need some hand holding security to purchase something not in your calculated interest.

OP, I personally avoid extended warranties; if it were me, that $1,700 would pay for the lift I want to put in my garage, but I get that not everyone is capable/enjoys working cars.

Remember that going against a car dealership is much like your local HS Football team playing against the winner of the Super Bowl; sure the game is the same but one team has a lot more experience than the other. Good luck!!

The average loss ratio on the warranties we sell at my dealership is around 7%. The loss ratio is how much money the average contract makes over the lifetime. If customers remembered they had a warranty 100% of the time then loss ratios would be in the negative, not the positive. An extended warranty is no different than having full coverage insurance or liability only insurance. I can guarantee that a great majority of people here have full coverage insurance, and don’t bet on themselves to be a perfect driver and not have to pay out of pocket in the event they cause an auto accident.

Extended warranties are just mechanical breakdown insurance, no more, no less. Would you rather self insure for automotive mechanical problems or would you like a reputable company to insure for you? That is why the OP wants one.

Good luck with your challenge, if it isn't too late, I'd be wanting to negotiate something more favorable to you. Get the sales person to eat most of the cost of the contract. Move on.
