The gas mileage isn't much different between the I4 and the V6, so I'd say get the V6 especially if you are getting a double cab.

Definitely do not get the 5 lug double cab version of the Tacoma. They look ridiculous sitting low to the ground with little bitty wheels.

3rd gen doesn't have a 4.0L so I assume you mean the 15 or older.

You have not defined how you'd use the vehicle.

If you don't do that, everyone is just telling you what they'd get, not what would fulfill your goals.

Some of us are quite content with a 2wd base 4 and auto, as it meets our needs.

Some really do need a 6 4x4, because they will use the truck very differently that I would.

And the whole 6 vs 4 and MPG being about the same is 'maybe'.

There's about 3mpg difference, average. You can do the math over the life of the vehicle and a cost for fuel. If that doesn't matter to you, that's fine.

But the base 4, like mine, is geared differently, and as a result, gets a good bit better MPG.

So, again, for best recommendations, define what you want the vehicle to be capable of.

Tacoma is stock and staying that way, Pickup is TBA as of now.
Said this in another thread not long ago, V6 for everything unless you have a regular cab. I have experience with both and will never go back to a 4 cylinder unless I get a regular cab which is the only option it has unless you go for a 95-97 Tacoma that had a V6 regular cab option.
The mileage isn't that different and with a 6, you can actually have some power when you need it instead of having to keep it floored up every long grade and pinned in a low gear.

For a double cab most people will say get the V6, a lot of people that that upgrade to the 6 never look back....

A few mpgs better but less power so unless the price is much better I would stick to the V6 on a double cab....
