So last December my windshield developed a small crack in it. Didn't catch a rock or anything. Just appeared one morning after sitting in the driveway over night. Of course it grew bigger and bigger. So had that replaced to the tune of $450 + tax.
Now, the other day... Was backing out of the driveway, and I hear a big 'POW!' from the rear. I'm thinking 'WTF was THAT?' There's absolutely nothing to run into.
The rear glass on my Snugtop shell.... Just shattered into a gazillion pieces! For no reason!
So I ordered a new one. Of course you can't order just the glass ... The replacement comes with new gas-lifts, hinges, new lock and bottom piece that comes with it. It's all one unit. So it takes like 10 minutes to replace. So I gotta' shell out another $800 for that.... AND it takes 8 weeks to get here...
Man.... I'm really getting sick n' tired of draining my wallet to replace stuff that broke through no fault of my own... Grrrrrrrrrr.....

I hosed off a windshield in the hot desert sun. The thermal shock cracked it instantly.

Well .... That is somewhat understandable though... If you're in say, Tucson where it's 120* and you hit it with 40-50* water? I could see that... LOL

Got away with doing that for decades. Until I didn't.

I changed the windshield in my 4Runner at least once a year when I lived in Colorado.

Good sealant is supposed to flex to prevent that. That said, it can still harden, and like mentioned, thermal shock

And costly! Ya know, I just don't get it .... I've owned various rigs... 60-70-80-90's ... Where, unless I caught a rock kicked up by a big rig or something? I never had to replace a windshield. Seems that like since 2000 and beyond... They just break for absolutely no reason.
You're right though ... This gets real old, real quick...

Not sure how much it happens, but I've read that the 4Runners have a prob with the rear glass just exploding at times. I kinda' dismissed it, until it happened to a buddy of mine. He was driving down I-40 in AZ on a perfect-weather day and the rear glass just shattered.

Where I live... If you buy the top-tier comprehensive insurance, they pay to replace any glass, no questions asked. But what you pay monthly for that... Not worth it. But I think you may be right about ... Probably EVERY auto manufacturer... Not just Toyota .... Whistling past the graveyard when it comes to the crap quality of auto glass these days.
Not sure where 'replacement' glass comes from these days, but I know it's mostly MIC. Might even be new factory stuff, IDK. But that could explain a lot.

Your right . I had glass coverage from Geico and it was $50 deductible every time . That's why I haven't complained too much about the cost. I have farmers now and I added glass buy back program and the deductible is a $100 . So I'll still pay $100 any day for a new windshield .

Had the same thing happen to me one morning in the winter. And of course, Safelight can't do the repair offsite which adds to the frustration!

I’m a detailer and this unfortunately has happened a few times to customers cars on hot days. I’m not liable when this happens though luckily

They are made to the absolute minimum tolerance. On a hot summer day when you roll up your windows and slam your door that pressure that builds up will cause a small crack at one of the edges where a flaw exists. Magically, you notice a small crack developing for no apparent reason.

I somehow got a rock chip on my glass behind my ditch light. No idea how a rock got there and didn't hit the light. Anyway I came back to my truck from work the next day and it spidered across my windshield. I didn't see the chip until I saw the crack at work
