What the hell with tire rotation at dealer?

I went in earlier this week for a tire rotation and oil change. Part of the free service for new takoma trd.
I get home and notice two chalk marks on the tire and pointed to the valve stem on the tire.
The valve cap for the stem is smashed and mangled and looked like someone twisted it with a pair of pliers or some such.
Now, my grandaughter could screw on a valve stem. Do you think the worker torqued the lugs nuts to 83 ft pounds?
    How could this possibly happen?
I called the service manager and am going in in a few days as it is a 3 hour drive both ways and I have to be in that city on Tuesday. Manager said he would take make and my wife to her dr's office a half mile away if they couldn't correct it right away.
I am certainly not going to get pliers and try to remove the cap as I believe the stem is smashed and air will leak out.
My question is how the hell could this happen? I can think of no possible way.

Apparently the tech is not happy with the measly stipend he is paid by his Toyota overlord to do this free service. If he is paid on shop hours he can't feed his family doing too many of these.

I don't like the idea of this dealership doing my oil changes.
Going to do them myself from now on if I can get the canister off. It's making me have doubts.
I ordered all the necessary tools including the newest motivx tool that fits the canister.

Caps don't retain air, their purpose is to keep debris out of the stem

You can get 4 caps at any parts house for around a buck, put them on, and go about your life.

Find a local independent quality shop and have your truck serviced there in the future.

The cap is smashed on and i'm pretty certain it also smashed the valve stem.

Going forward, any further dealings with your dealership for ANY work completed, you need to scan over the truck for anything out of place on anything they touched...before you leave the lot.

Then, be bold and go back in and make them correct it pronto.

After your Toyota Care is up, NEVER go back to the dealer shy of warranty work or recalls. There are much more qualified small businesses that will do a better job as they want to stay in business.

Unless they really over torqued the oil canister I can certainly perform this myself

Not necessarily. As stated, those caps are to keep road grime out and are not a pressure boundary by any stretch. If it's not leaking air now, it won't when you remove the mangled plastic cap. I'd remove it and check the actual metal stem head for damage. Good chance everything is fine and all you need is a new cap which are probably 4 for a dollar at Walmart

I guess i'm lucky to have a very good toyota dealer, but won't go back after this last oil change is done. I can get the job done by an independent Napa garage thats equally as good, plus our company i retired from use to service the owners home. Been there doing work, and know the family well.

You absolutely can perform all the work yourself. Basic hand tools.

The guys doing the 2 year Toyota Care are not usually ASE certified techs, merely oil jockeys like you find at Jiffy Lube.

The dealer takes the wheels off? They didn't for my first service but somehow got rear brake shoe measurements, that were disk pad measuements and double what a new shoe is even available with!

My suspicion would be you had a nail in your tire and they fixed it for you. The chalk mark is there when they break the bead on the tire. It lets them remove the tire from the rim, fix it, and remount without having to balance again.

I don't even trust my local Discount Tires to get lugs torqued right. I've watched them zip the nuts on with an impact gun, and then go back with a preset torque wrench. Duh, when the nuts are zipped on to 110+ ft/lbs, it will certainly click at 83 ft/lbs.

After a five way tire rotation, I check and redo all the lug torques myself once back at home. Yes, I could do a five tire rotation myself, but without a car lift it takes me beyond my motivation to fiddle. A retorque is quick, painless, and solid peace of mind.

    Oh geeze,

    a dealership miscue...???

I had a crappy re-install of the bolts taken off the thin metal plate at the front of my Sport only to have the bolts overtorqued and one of them re-installed at an angle.

Makes me wonder how the rest of the service went for my oil change.

I purchased my TRD Sport in Easton, Maryland (because a co-worker raved about the service/selection) so I traveled 45 miles from Dover and bought my truck there.

For my first service, I decided to schedule my truck closer to my location but not in Dover (I just didn't like the appearance of the dealership there). So I went to Milford. That's where the service was provided and after visiting/talking to the service manager, was not satisfied with the way the issue was resolved.

Needless to say, I called the sales rep who sold me my Sport in Easton and told him what happened...he said, bring it here and I'll make sure you don't get that kind of service.

So, come Feb/2022 I'll make the trek to Easton and have it serviced...to what I expect, my satisfaction. Rant over. lol

Lesson learned OP. I took mine in for the "Free Toyota Care" oil change and rotation the first time and they chowdered every lug hole on my brand new wheels. After a month of back and forth they finally cut me a check for the full cost. Guess they found out cheap labor is not so cheap. If I could give any advice it would be CHECK EVERY INCH OF YOUR VEHICLE BEFORE YOU LEAVE THE STEALERSHIP.

Needless to say that was my last trip there for service :luvya:
