I am the original owner of a 2007 Tacoma, double cab, short bed, TRD, 4x4 w/ appx 95k miles

I was a big fan of Toyotas since the early 80's but now I can't decide what to do with it (like selling it)

The interior looks nearly new except for wear on the drivers seat lower cushion for which I have a replacement factory cover. The bed has never been used so it is scratch free

    Now for the bad...

It is Super White, first the clear coat on the fender flares failed (could have lived or dealt with that) but now the white paint is flaking off in several areas :annoyed: I have always hand washed it but now I am even afraid to do that

The 4x4 only blinks on the dash also :(

I don't mind having a old vehicle but it has to look nice and things have to work.

I wish I would have bought a new truck prior to the pandemic as everything has gotten stupid expensive

Both of my BIL's have asked if I would sell them the truck (they want a family deal) but I am not made out of gold so I don't know if I should sell it to them or anyone else.

What could be a fair price if I were to decide and sell?

If a dealer offers $10K, and you buy a car from them at the same time, then you are exempt from sales tax on that $10K trade value. So if sales tax is 9%, then it's like you applied $10900 toward the one you buy.

Go shop. The fair family/friend deal is the trade-in value + sales tax for the dealer you want to buy from, with agreement the vehicle is sold as-is. If they won't accept that price/term, then trade it in, or test the private party market knowing you make a few more bucks in exchange for endless annoying tire kickers.

Bottom line is don't feel pressured or expected to incur a higher level of debt for someone just because they are related to you. Else ask them for the family hook-up, which is lessening your next car debt by paying you more than dealer trade-in, which is considered bottom dollar.

Get instant online appraisals from Carmax, Carvana and AutoNation. It's quick, free, non-binding, and you get a wag of what to expect. And don't accept a trade in for less than one of these minus sales tax.

Also, when you go shop, you don't need to clean the heck out of the truck, and absolutely do not point out any issues you know about it.

Hard to say. I feel like it depends on the going rates in the area you live in. Check out craigslist or FB and see. The demand of buyers will help you figure out a fair asking price.
Fix what you reasonably can and just try and sell it and see.

Fix the 4wd and either live with the paint, or sell it and get something else if you need a truck

So it sounds like you have an "07 TRD with low miles in good condition. (also sounds like your BIL's know that too). What does your wallet think? Spend a bit to fix a few issues and know what you've got or spend a lot on an new (er) vehicle and start all over. Just boils down to what you want to see in your driveway when you head out the door every morning.
    Cheers.

I do (did) love the truck but the flaking paint issue really bothers me as it first just affected one of the doors and then expanded to an area on the bed.

Get it repainted? A new truck is going to cost a lot more.

It's a known truck (yours) and it's clear you took good care of it. My son has a 2005 in black metallic color and his clear coat is gone on the roof and the hood now... so it's not just Super White that has issues. Frame OK? If it was mine, I would get it painted as long as the frame is good and there is no major body rust. Spend the money to fix the 4x4 glitches and drive it for another 150,000 miles.

As long as the frame isn't toast with that low of milage it's basically a new truck... just getting broke in. Fix the 4X4 isuue, get it repainted, and enjoy it for years to come.

Fixing the actuator and painting the truck sounds a lot cheaper.

This is a good point, especially in CA where taxes are high.

However it’s worth considering that a private sale and application of those funds as a down payment will likely be a better move from a purely financial perspective because trade values are so much lower than private sale values, typically by more than the sales tax saving on the trade value. The caveat is that selling a car privately has its painful aspects.

The worst part of new paint is the new scratches that come next. But I get you on when paint is bad enough to bother you. I’m in the one camp on my ‘05 (PO repainted) and the other with my ‘02 Tundra (paint detracts from the looks in my opinion but repainting feels irresponsible to me.)

Definitely fix the 4wd problem unless trading to a dealer.

I’d see about some creative ways to fix up or repaint. I’d look at at a Line-x possibly getting done.

Fix the light. Can get a good paint job for 5kish. The trucks good for another 300k easy and don’t go 35-40k in the hole. It’s really a simple decision imo. Oh f… the family deal BIL pays fair market or he pounds sand.

I don't know how far up you are but it might be worth it to run it down to TJ for a "less expensive" but acceptable paint job. And definitely get the 4WD fixed and decide from there. If it were me, I'd keep it and drive it for as long as I could.
