Yea having 2 extra gears is probably a game changer. Mine is the 4speed auto and i have 5.29 and its not enough lol. Im gonna throw a Turbo or supercharger on there at some point.

I disagree. I can only speak to the auto but it already has a 3.91 gear and it's not enough considering OD ratios. I'd prefer the rear to stay around 3.73 and 5/6 gears not so steep. Going by the link in your sig 5th gear in Taco auto (.69) is the same ratio as 6th gear in Fords (6r80) 6 speed trans.

I'm sure the MT feels totally different considering 6th is .71 (compared to .58 in auto) and 4.30 vs 3.91. Overall thats a big difference.

I agree with you there. I would be stoked with lower diff ratios. 3.909 is massive compared to other big ratios. But, Toyota has been in that game for decades.

Yeah. There are some other trannies with even better ratios, including some non-US Toyota MTs. Overall, I am happy, have not found myself lacking offroad, and get great MPGs. I would be in a very different boat with an AT though. I would probably not have a Taco at all?

Are you saying with a factory set up or with the 33s? They don’t design a truck thinking I bet guys are gonna modify and put 33s 35s on so let’s put this gear ratio in.

I got the 2.7l auto with the P245 Toyo A31 peanut tires and I cant get it to go up grades without downshifting to third, so putting on 33 inch AT tires on that setup is rather stupid if your looking to keep the stock performance aint got nothing to do with the motor/trans. design.

2021 4X4 Sport AC 3.5L MT - OME lift with Dakar leafs. 10x33 Coopers. ARB Bumper. KDMax Tune. 2017 SE AC 2.7L 2WD AT - OME lift with Dakar leafs, BA bumper, tooter manifold spacer, header, OVTuned. LED lights. Does not run like your average 2.7; this truck pulled a broken down HMMWV out of a wash. 2008 PreRunner 4.0L - 3" spring lift with Bilstein 5100s, ARB bumper, rear sway arm. Old Reliable, been around, beat up, and still runs like a beast.
To the couple of folks who have taken it upon them selves to explain how stupid I am for running 33's on a 2.7L truck, etc.

I remind you that the purpose of the post was to relate anecdotal information about how differently this specific truck runs when changed from 3.90's to 4.88. That was stated right up front. I do not apologize if you were triggered by an owners critical remarks about Toyota's engineering decisions regarding the 3rd Gen 2.7L AT Tacoma.

I know exactly how expensive the gear was. Toyota should have done it right and I wouldn't have had too.

I've had 4 bangers in Toyota trucks since they were called simply "Truck". I know what a 4 banger in a small 1/2 ton truck will do when set up right. Moderately larger street/off road tires and pulling loads are not normally a big deal in a multi-purpose utility vehicle. I still like this 3rd Gen truck that came to me with a moderate lift and larger than stock tires. I did the work and made a correction.

I'm sorry you have such a lack of vision. You should raise your expectations, you bought a Tacoma.

To everyone else, Thank You for your discussion and remarks.

No one said running 33" tires was stupid.

Someone disagreeing with you on a public forum is not them getting "triggered". You should pull the beam out of your own eye.

Toyota designed the 4-cylinder truck fine for most drivers, not to your specific expectations.

Most people keep stock size tires. Toyota didn't screw up...

Awww!! Couldn’t afford the 3.5 and so it’s Toyota’s fault. Now that’s a jab. :boink:

You're right, a Prius has more balls than any 4 banger taco.

Still think you got it all wrong

You're still missing the point. The whole purpose of the internet is for other people to tell you how wrong you are. No matter what the subject.

just curious, the MPGs you are getting after the gear swap is after doing speedometer correction for tire size and gear ratio?

There was a discussion here some time ago, I am not sure if was a SC or turbo. I think the main issue was cost. The cost of the aftermarket boosting kit is more than the price difference between the same trim of 2.7 vs 3.5, and booster 2.7 still makes less power/torque than 3.5

Yup, the ratios with factory tires, still suck.
that 3rd to 4th is the worst I've had on any vehicle I've ever owned and I've owned a dozens. The 6th gear is useless and a nuisance. I use the auto stick...reluctantly.
I need to get that gear change but I don't wanna spend anymore money on the truck, tbh. Ill just live with the abomination.
this is even with a tune. I would have traded it back if I couldn't get a better tune.

I have a 16 manual 2.7, lifted, 32'' 10 ply MT's, steel skid plate, towhitch, fullsize spare in rear. Truck struggles in 5th gear on highway going up hills on my daily drive. I am in 5th gear pedal to the floor most of the drive, and work up momentum going into the hills. It works though, but its a struggle at times !! I do want gears, but just cant afford em now, maybe someday. I do plan to keep this thing for the long haul !
