Detroit locker is most definitely cheaper than the air locker. Air locker is great if your going to have kids and wives drive your shit on the open roads.

I have had both auto and manual, all depends on what you are going to do with it. Most of my rock crawling vehicles have autos.

The Suburban was a freaking great vehicle, we have had 3 of them, been driving them for over 30 years. Problem is like everything else, they break down. Wife lost a wheel at 80mph in this one, I am currently doing a SAS with 1 tons now. It's going to be a monster when I am done with it.20170531_081123.jpg

Good info thank you. If I see anything in the ball park I'll keep this in mind. Long term durability is deffinately a bonus.

Did you see the 1000 4 runner I posted above?

Crawl box - you mean after market transfer case?

Yeah its nice to have the ability of keeping upward momentum with the autos.

I was just talking to the wife about a 7 or 8 seater yesterday. Laying the ground work :bananadance:. Fun side project

Yea it's a reduction unit that goes in between the trans and the transfer case multiplying the low range down stream. Meaning if you have a 4:1 crawl box you multiply that by the low range of the transfer case, allowing you to crawl really slow and multiplying the torque. Example being I have a 2.28:1 crawl box, 4.7:1 low range in the transfer case for a total of 10.71 in low low range. Comes out to a few thousand ftlbs of torque when you factor in the trans and diff gears.

My advice is always wheel what you have stock ALOT that way you know what you want or need and you dont waste money on useless mods. Most of the Tacoma's you see here decked out with LED lights, roof racks, extra fuel cans etc fall into this useless mods category IMO. For the record I have to drive 8hrs on the highway one way to my closest wheeling area and I can fit everything I need in the bed or back of the extra cab for a week of wheeling/camping, in this thing:

Would kill for a crawl box, to be able to actually crawl up obstacles without feathering the clutch sounds like heaven. Definitely on the to do list for the future

So you would have to get a modified (shorter) drive shaft if you are adding onto the transfer case then ? That's a
I've seen a video on TW with a guy who has some insane ratio. Cant remember what it was but was a white taco.

It is a possibility if I smash a case and squint really hard

Did ya see the 2000 buck 4 runner? Would you wheel that?

YES! That is the one. I watched the video of the Taco rock crawling...pretty nice set up.
Seems like that's the mechanical equivalent to the fancy new electronically controlled crawl control. My choice would be mechanical if $$$ wasn't a factor. Others here with the Off Roads or with new 4 runners may disagree though

No just because I dont like that generation of 4runner. I have a friend who has one that same year ad the one you posted on 37s, solid axle, dual cases, exo cage and a 3.4 swap.

This is an open-ended question. If you told me I had carte-blanche to build a dedicated trail truck that was street-legal and could also be used to camp out of, I'd build a Jeep LJ on tons, 40s, ORIs, and Hemi-swapped with a 30 gallon GenRight tank. I'd pull a surplus trailer with a tent on it behind it.

But to keep it realistic, of the stuff you're considering, it'd be hard to beat a Jeep ZJ with the 5.2L. It's actually got the cargo room to be a comfortable 5 night touring truck, and it's already got a solid axle. The Dana 30 is dog doo doo compared to heavier axles, but is still considerably stronger than any factory IFS offering from Ford, Toyota, or otherwise. So if you stuck with 33"s you wouldn't even need to source Waggys or Rubis and swap it. Find one with a 231 t case and you're set for under $7500 built.

Nice. Were building a WJ right now. Long arm, 3 linked, trussed Dana 44, V8. Having wheels powered right now. Got a 10K winch and a full steel plate bumper ready for it also.

Can you talk about some of the pros and cons of like an Eaton G80 vs the E lockers like on the Tacos?
