Whats up, so I have a few questions I'm planning on getting an 05 or newer tacoma as soon as I sell my WRX. I plan on putting a super charger on it. Wondering what tranny is best. From what I've gathered the 5 speed is strongest so it would be the best and the 6 is no good for it but what about the autos?

I would recommend a good long test drive in both before you make a decision. Aside from the throw-out bearing issue with the 6 speeds ( which has been completely redesigned), most of the negative comments are not based on any kind of facts. Try one yourself, make your own decision.

Either is perfectly capable of handling the supercharger, but if you intend to force feed it, I would recommend a truck with a towing package that has the engine oil cooler, and tranny cooler for autos.

I believe the redesign on the 6 speed manual was during the 2010 model year, so if you're buying a relatively new truck, you can feel pretty safe choosing based on your personal preference, but on older 2nd Gens, the auto trans may be the safer choice, in terms of reliability. If you're looking at 4 cylinder models, however, I've heard the 5 speed is solid.

I own a 2012 6 speed and love it, for what it's worth.

Love my 6 speed. Will take any problems that might come over a slush box anyday. ;)

If you want 4x4 get Offroad and an over 08 with ATRAC. If 4x2 get a Sport and add an ARB. The ATRAC will suffice as a front traction aid in about every situation but serious rockcrawling.

And get the auto... its designed to handle a V8.

Good call, was thinking the OP was after a new truck when I posted, which isn't the case. I'm thinking it was 2011 that the update happened in production as it was around Feb or March 2011 that the TSB with the updated parts came out, IIRC.

If you are looking at a 2005-2010 with the 6spd, expect to have to upgrade the release bearing to the URD sleeve and bearing kit at some point. $225 in parts, and labour to R+R the tranny.

So the sport is the way to go? I was thinking off road was better. Ok so what's this ATRAC I'm guessing automatic traction control but, does this only come on sport 4x2?

Unless he can find one where the TSB has already been applied.

Or that. So long as its the new TSB. There was a TSB prior to the current one, that replaced parts with the same as they were built with. I would think any dealer would have access to warranty history to find out whether a truck has been updated or not.

If you don't plan on doing a lot of off roading, the TRD Off Road is useless.

So would I be better off getting the sport and adding a locker. Or just the offroad to begin with. What does the sport have the offroad doesn't have..I'm a subaru guy so lots of questions.

Scooped hood, 17" alloys, color matched grille and rear bumper instead of chrome. OR has progressive front springs where the base, SR5, and sport all have linear coils.

I disliked my progressive front coils and chrome grill on the Offroad. Replaced both. The rear locker on the OR is not as reliable to activate at low speeds as an ARB. You def want TRD seats... way better than base seats so you want SOME TRD package. The OR is great for the money if you offroad in a 4x4... if not just get a sport. Has a thicker stabiliser bar for onroad handling, better looking wheels, color matched trim, etc.

Ok so what I'm getting is I really just should get a TRD package. Whether it be sport or OR. it will see occasional OR but I'm talking like a bumpy/rocky dirt road nothing crazy.

If it's only bumpy/rocky dirt roads a TRD Sport will do just fine. Heck, even a 2wd would probably be ok. I once went on a super rough/bumpy "road" with my lowered Corolla XRS and I made it through no problem. Turns out it was actually an access road to a farm field.

Yea I figured the two wheel drives could do quite a bit off road just wasn't sure how much.
