all of them are insecure except for that diamondback. there may be others with security but they are heavy, bulky, expensive, and tend to be relatively more permanent and not as easily removable. but if you priority security they are available at a cost.

Try tightly wrapped Saran Wrap. Makes a nice cover. Can not walk on.

I recommend the one I gladly sold- the OEM one. I didn’t want it, but it was pretty nice. Sure to be other lightly new used ones for a good price out there.

I got a great deal on a used Solid Fold 2.0. Works well and really easy to take off if you need the whole bed.

I had a bakflip on my 2nd gen tacoma...i loved it but i hated that it didn't fold flat and it wasn't easily removable. Now i've got the extang solid fold 2.0, got a good deal on it in a craigslist find. I love that its easily removable and folds flat. It serves its purpose of keeping stuff secure in the bed but its still easily removable when i need to hall tall cargo. I would definitely buy again.

    +1 for the bakflip mx4.
    pros
-easy install and would be easily removed
-looks good and is easily cleaned
    -is most definitely secure
-assemblies with minor defects can be found on Amazon for a significant discount (mine was ~65% off and the defect was extremely minor)
    cons
    -not really water resistant

What is wrong with putting it in the back seat? I wouldn't have a tonneau cover if I used my truck bed very often. I don't use mine at all so I could get by with a one piece if I had the money.

I have the factory OEM Tacoma cover and I love it. It's a tri fold and it can easily be taken off and carried away by one person. I never thought of buying one but my truck came with it and I've grown to absolutely love it. Couldnt imagine not having it. It's pretty much water tight as well.

RuggedCover2 on my long bed. It’s well built, secure and I chose it mainly because it can be removed completely from the truck in about a minute leaving only 4 small aluminum pieces in the factory channels. I wanted one that left the bed completely open for the occasional motorcycle in the back and I did’t like the covers that stand up behind the rear window or have extra rails permanently bolted in the the factory channels. I have seen a bit of water in the bed but I can’t be sure if it’s leaking around the cover or if it’s coming up through the drain holes while driving.
I believe I paid about $800 out the door for it too.

I got the OEM tri-fold SOFT top. So much easier to remove/store and much lighter.

I use, have things in, my bed on average 3 days a week. with the cover I know my cargo is secure. At this time of year, while running around from store to store, working 8-10 hour days it is peace of mind to know what I put in the bed will still be there when I return. I can load the bed up with stuff to take to the warehouse, a customer, or vendor today and drop it by on the way home or on the way in to the office the next day. With it in the bed I do not have to smell the oil on the metal parts, the residual smell form the spot welds, the plastic finished goods are wrapped in ect.

Why not put it in the back seat? Windows!! Items falling from the seat to the floor, rolling under the front seat while driving, the bed is MUCH larger with the cover closed than the back seat. This is true if the seat is folded down or not. in most cases if a thief can not see anything to steal, they move on to another vehicle. My hard tri-fold is not see through and locks via the tailgate. Large items may not fit in the back seat, I can open the cover and stack items high if need be, though doing so does loose security.

I'm talking to the guy and I explained to him that if he needs to haul something where he needs the full bed he can take the tonneau cover off quickly and then I suggested he could put the tonneau cover in his double cab. He favors roll up covers so he don't have to take a hard or soft tri-fold cover off when he needs the full bed. Thank you.

I usually have stuff or people in my back seat. Even if I could, unbolting and removing a trifold and storing in my back seat as often as I would need to would just be a pain. Everyone's needs are different.

    Anyway, I digress as I don't have a tri-fold.

    Carry on.

OK.. you have a 5' bed... how often do you really need more than 4'7" of higher than bedside area available?

The Flex and Bak covers fold to about 6" from the back of the cab and when closed extend only about 1/2 to 3/4 below the top of the bed sides. If you tailgate is locked they are both quite secure and can not be accessed without "breaking in" while any soft cover can be. I had a soft cover on my 1st gen and loved it. I also know that any fool could open wither the cover or the tailgate with 1 -2 fingers, thus I NEVER considered it secure only hidden from sight and somewhat sheltered.

Obviously, the cover you choose is up to you. go with what you like and feel you have paid for what you want/get out of it.

Enjoy your Taco and make your truck yours.
