If you’re going overlanding, nav is a tool in the toolbox to supplement the handheld GPS, and the iPhone you’ve downloaded area from on topomaps (not that junk hema that overland expedition pimps) to use offline, and a freakin compass.

OP can’t go wrong in any trim or engine in the 3rd gen Tacoma.

Same deal. Dealers on average wanted 3K more for the OR. As of the moment, I wasn’t willing to pay that. I’m already nearing $2,000 for saw competition needs for the season. Once I send off the 52mm cylinder for a skim bore and replating today, it’s now heading towards 3K. But that’s my desire. I knew I’d be using my credit card way too much had I gotten the OR. I’ve been averaging 5-7 years on trade ins. So that extra 3K just doesn’t work out for me this time around.

I’m happy with the SR5’s 4x4 performance. Particularly with the video where the SR locks the lifted left front wheel in mid air, transferring all power to the right wheel. That was a big peace of mind being used to lockers and atrac. It’s certainly capable in 4x4 mode. Don’t let anyone tell you different.

If I had to do it again I'd have gotten the 2017 SR 2.7L AC 4x4 5MT. Last of the 5-speeds.

Wife talked me into the Off-Road, and it's cool, but to me the 4 bangers are a lot more fun.

If I had to do it all over again for myself......I'd buy another SR5 DCSB AT with tow package. Only change I'd consider would be....perhaps going with a different color. I'd go Quicksand next time around.

In your situation, though, with your interests for overloading and such.....I'd likely go with a TRD OR model.
