I replaced my wife's windshield with the heating element for $300. Works fine.

Back to the 4x4 vs 4x2 debate. Here in North Florida you are allowed to drive on some beaches but sometimes only 4x4 is allowed. Not saying that's right or wrong. That's just the way it is.

Yeah I can't believe a forum post had me thinking and having to come back to it. But in response to PackCon's hyper retarded comment about 'if you're gonna have a truck you have to have 4x4'.

Here in NM at least it's the clearance you need. I know guys with Tacomas who never even put them in 4x4. Then I have friends with 2wd trucks who are never shut down in getting anywhere. We all rock climb and sometimes the approaches can be gnarly.. but i've seen more Foresters and VW campervans back in some of the spots than I have TRDOR yadda yadda yadda.

And that brings me to another point.. since I moved to the US i've been amazed at the amount of spec'd up trucks driving around. But i hardly EVER see anything in the beds of them..those trucks actually doing the work are always the little rangers or the old F150s. And pretty much 50:50 2wd to 4x4. Shit I drive a Toyota Matrix right now and i would put money on it that I've taken that thing down gnarlier roads, packed with more gear than 75 % of the 4x4 air locker jacked up performance enhanced $35k+ rigs i see driving around.

When it comes time to buy, which will be soon, I'll be more than happy with a 2wd w/ locker. It'll get me everywhere I need to go in the SW. Fact.

Disclaimer: YMMV if you get snow. Although 4x4 never helped anyone stop in snow. And my gfs parents live in Wisconsin and drive a Camry so not sure I'm convinced it's needed there either.

Why do people care so much what other people prefer to drive? Some people just like owning trucks, even if the only use it to do "work" once a year....or never. Some people simply like having 4x4 available in their said truck. Other's don't. Who really gives a fuck? Is it really that important to try and convince other's why they should or should not have a truck, or should or should not have 4-wheel drive?

TL;DR - buy a fucking truck if you want one. Or don't if you don't want one. And get whatever drivetrain you think viable for you.

same here, my son drives a 15 camry up here and it doesn't stop him. but then again he is only driving around after 2-3 days of snow clearing by the city/highway crews.

now if you need to get places where the crews have not been yet, then the 4WD and clearance make a big difference. me I have to be at work and I am hitting the roads between 5:30 to 6 am. trying to get out of unplowed subdivisions, city streets and 15 mile highway drive, that 4WD comes in handy.

The problem here comes from .... people who think that if you tow 5000 lb you need fullsize. What they don't understand around the globe people tow that with passenger Mercedes cars with out issues.
The same folks think they need midsize (almost fullsize ) pickup just to tow 3000lb in the meantime small SUV or Minivan would do the job.

And their are people who think that a truck rated to tow 6800 pounds can't do the job. Because the truck has a girly motor.

girly motor will do the job, but it will $hit itself in process and will not last. Thats why Italians tried to do the same thing as Germans did (tow large trailers behind passenger cars) and those Fiats became one with scenery.

Dude, I'm with you. Just irks me when guys like ol' mate up there say that you NEED 4wd if you buy a truck. Fuck, just admit it...9 times out of 10 4x4, TRD, lift etc etc is a luxury, not a necessity.

those people pulling a trailer with a merc/small car/etc in other countries also are not trying to do the dam 70 mph speed limit and are actually pulling at a respectable 55mph/90kmh.

I am going to let you on little secret... somebody wrote that BS and it gets repeated over and over. With exception maybe of Northern portion of Germany, Belgium, Holland and Scandinavian countries the rest of Europe drives pretty much just like you see on Russian dash cam videos.
Americans are the upstanding drivers, and model of proper driving etiquette (you may not believe this but its a pleasure to drive in US). NYC Yellow cab drivers would be considered slow and very friendly on the European road.
In Europe at 70 MPH you will get passed by Renault, at the same time BMW will be passing You and Renault, and behind BMW there will be TIR (Transports Internationaux Routiers aka European 18 wheeler) flashing lights at everybody...
