This thread has really gone off the rails, so I don't feel too bad in asking this. How *do* you dispose of your old coolant? Properly, I mean.

Edit: What I'm really asking is this: What is the proper means of disposing of old coolant?

Color is irrelevant, there is only 3 types of coolant. Iat, oat, and hoat. The biggest difference between them is service intervals, toxicity, and ability to fight hard water and scaling.

Iat is the typical green that has been used since the beginning of time. Oat came about in the 90s and is what both Dexcool, and hoat is what most modern coolants are, I.e. Toyota red, pink, the universal stuff, etc. are and are a hybrid of both the iat and oat to get the best of both worlds.

My oem rad went out around 200k, replaced with a off the shelf from parts place. Just used the old green stuff and it cools just fine. However all other parts I use Toyota oem now. I’m wanting to get everything needed to replace my VC gaskets but after gunny quoted me I can’t seem to get ahold of him. Been over a week now with no response.

Don't mix types of anti freeze. My 99 was like that when I bought. Several flushes and radiator change later and the smaller lines were still clogged (heater control valve, iac valve and lines, heater core)!!!

A couple of years ago on Velocity channel I saw a resto-mod where they used a water-less anti-freeze product. I wonder if that stuff is still around.

I'm just wondering what people do their old coolant? In California I'm recommended to take it to the hazmat center...

Is it recycled? Or end up in a barrel incased in concrete and layed to rest in Beatty, NV? Or are you guys poring into the used motor oil tub?:bananadead:

Where I live in the winter. I let mine warm up for about 15 minutes every morning when it's really cold outside. I try not to put it into gear until the scanaguage reads at least 100 degrees. In the summer? The same thing. Minimum of 100 degrees before I put it into gear. I like 120 degrees better but time sometimes doesn't allow for that. Not every time but 98% of the time. On really cold days "30 degrees or colder" I never turn the engine off even if I'm going to the local grocery store. Unless, I know I'll be in there fore at least 15 minutes. For short 5 minute stops at the local convenience store I never shut it off. I never shut it off when gassing up either since the Taco has the exhaust running down the opposite side of the truck. Starters are expensive and a PIA to install. Not only that, but "duty cycle" has a lot to do with longevity of any engine. Engines last longer running all the time than those that are stopped and started 5 times a day or more.. Witness the mileage they get out of Cabs and Police vehicles which are never shut off. You can go longer between oil changes that way as well.

You should always take it to a reclamation center which I always did until I moved to Wyoming. I will look around again when I change mine at the end of this summer. The last time, I went to every auto parts store in the area and none would take old anti-freeze. The local dump would but that's not possible for me due to my job. After 3 months of searching I just dumped it down the toilet. Not good. I'll continue my search so I don't have to do that ever again. Maybe I'll have a friends wife take it to the dump.

In Kalifornia there is no reason whatsoever to NOT take it to an approved "dump center". Out there just about any auto parts store will take used anti-freeze.

Yup. Does not seem possible to simply answer the question. Have to debate every little goddamn thing lately.

Can we all just start down voting old man river's videos, I swear that guy might have known something back when the pioneers were driving rocks, but he's just an old car xenophobe now

IMHO I can't see a problem with anyone who drains the minuscule radiator on a 2.7 and re-fills it with new coolant every oil change if they can afford it. I'm seriously thinking about draining my radiator and reservoir at the end of every summer.

walmart collects the coolant or check with your local trash collector.

I stick to what I know works for longer periods, I'm not gonna shoot someone in the foot for doing something different from me. your ride, my ride.
