Totally agree, I'm not even sure they are very accurate, which probably doesn't matter that much anyway. I use a wire-type gauge that makes it real easy to check gap.

    http://www.grainger.com/Grainger/BLACKHAWK-BY-PROTO-Spark-Plug-Feeler-Gauge-2R643?Pid=search

I'm also totally not anal about getting it exactly on spec: an essentially fruitless endeavor that ignores a lot of stuff and mostly winds up damaging plugs if anything, especially expensive fine-wire iridium and platinum tip plugs.

I use a go/no-go approach. Since gap for the V6 is .043, I use 40 and 45: if .040 is a go and .045 is a no-go then it's good. Just touch lightly, no reason to wiggle or force it with a wire gauge.

The Bosch 4x electrodes, are great, and you don't have to gap them.

Any plug from the dealer is already gapped, no need to even check the gap on those, and as far as i am aware even aftermarket plugs that are platinum or iridium are pregapped. It is extremely rare nowadays to need to "gap" a spark plug. Doing so on any plug for our trucks is more likely to cause damage insteaad of helping.

I have yet to get a set of plugs that werent off by +/- .004 in the set. or more. Im anal about the gaps in plugs, so I check, and gap accordingly. I tell everyone to check the gaps. It doesnt take long, and that way they know its all good.

On the other hand, i have yet to have any issue EVER with any plug i have had handed to me from my parts people. But to each their own, if you want to go that extra step, more power to you, i personally wouldnt waste my time cause, like i said, never had a problem, and i am here to make money.

Interesting, in 6 years i have never had a need to check, never had a problem. Only 1 time have i even recieved a bad plug and i cant begin to imagine how many spark plugs i have replaced here.

Like i stated earlier, i'm not knocking anyone who wants to spend their time checking gap, but in 6 years with toyota, i have never had a problem resulting from out of spec gap.

They were all very close. I just took time to gap them all at .040.

And just a heads up, everyone seems to keep referring to .040 gap, there is some wiggle room if you check, this is what the book states:

    Standard electrode gap:
    1.0 to 1.1 mm (0.039 to 0.043 in.)

So all at .040 should be fine? Correct? Can't hurt having them all the same...within spec.

My comment was based on the fact that others are worried about having them dead on the money with no differences. Obviously .040 is good and within spec, but to be so worried about .001 or .002 here and there obviously is a little too anal if you ask me. But thats all from me, good luck to everyone thats concerned so much about gap to that degree.

Dont use Bosh in toyota. My father was using them in his taco and the tip of one fell off and fell into the engine and he had to get a new piston and get it bored out. the mechanic said yes they work well but the arent ment for most vehicals because they are ment for european cars only. they dont work well with anything else. they do give you better mpg and horsepower but they will cause more damage. they are crap. and he said that happens alot with vehicals. he said stick to OEM always.

The only thing he said that is correct.

The problem your father had wasn't the Bosch plug. The problem was a defective plug (or perhaps the incorrect plug that caused the piston to hit the tip).
Bosch plugs weren't "designed for" European engines... they are spark plugs and they are no different than any other plug with a funky ground electrode design. They don't work any better in a German car than a Japanese car, and they don't work any worse in an American car than a German car.

They don't deliver more power, or better mileage.

All they do (all any plug does) is ignite the fuel mixture.
Any clean plug with a proper gap will do that.

Any NEW plug will deliver better power than an old dirty plug.
Platinum and Iridium simply extend the service intervals from 30k to 60k and 100k. Platinum and Iridium will not deliver any more power or MPG than a copper plug when new.
