    I’m not a dealer and only had one car at a time myself or one at a time for each myself and my wife (after marriage) until we started to have a convertible for fun.

    This covers about 34 years of driving. Almost all of the first 20 or so used cars were real rats, purchased for anywhere from $40 to $500 and driven until a repair came up that exceeded the value of the vehicle. The first new car (Fairmont) I got tired of working extra hours in college just to make a car payment.

    The Neon and the Contour (1999 bought in 2000 as a leftover) were so mechanically deficient that they were quickly disposed of.

    Some were just a rat to drive back and forth to work after buying the house and starting to raising kids (the Chevette is the closest I'll probably come to owning a 'vette).

    Once the money situation got a little better, we were able to get back into new cars and avoid having to deal with the nuances of an older high mileage car on family trips.

    For a while I would get tired of a car in 18 months or so, I'd pass what I was driving to my wife and get something new.

    The 2nd, 3rd & 4th Miatas were 2 year leases, (the 2010 is ours though).

    There is a story behind each of those cars, something inside motivated me to buy it, whether it was the potential for fun (the 340 4bbl Dart Swinger, the Celica or the Scirocco) or it was cheap and better than what I was in (the $40 1971 Pinto, the $145 Torino) or I needed to buy something cheap to have more money to clothe the kids, put food on the table and fix up the house (Cutlass wagon).

    I just wish that I had pictures of all of them. I read somewhere that you really haven’t bonded with your car until you photograph it. The onset of cell phone and iPod cameras have taken something away from this theory as of late, used to be you would have to make the effort to find your camera and actually take the film in for developing.
