I chose 17, yes I have one, however it was the last year before they made the TSS standard, and it was the last year we all said farewell to the 5 speed manual in our beloved 2.7L brothern.

Herp, derp my 4.0L has more torque! That means it's a better truck.

There is a reason why I traded my 16 for my 18.

Of Gen 3.0, 2018 is the most equipped. It has TSS (incl. dynamic cruise), a power rear window, and both bed cubbies are intact. No other year has that. The only difference between 19 and 18, as far as I can tell, is the missing cubby.

The cubbies took away a noticeable amount of HP.

Anyone buying a Tacoma of any year for hp or torque is clearly misguided. It’s an expensive truck for a comparatively small package but I bought mine because I didn’t want a beast in the grocery store parking lot or on the trails and my boat only weighs a little over 3k lbs.

They also removed the gopro mount on 2019+ model years. Some may not care about that, but my dash cam enjoys that spot

Truth! No Tacoma has ever rusted out as perfectly as the ‘04s! Whatever special-something Toyota puts in the steel to give us all these fabulous rusty frames, I like to think they put just a little bit extra in the 04’s.

Voted '17. I have a '16 and have driven a '15 extensively. Would take a 3rd gen again and again. Wish I had power rear window of a '17, headlights of a '20, and TSS of an '87.

    1. You can cling to that catch phrase all you want. But in this case, half a liter less replaced 38 horsepower. When taking engines, numbers speak louder than words - period.

    2. Read my first reply.

Honestly only time will tell. An engine revving higher full time for daily tasks doesn’t sound like it’s going to stand the test of time. I could be totally wrong and the transmission is going to be the likely casualty in the newer trucks.

"Feelings" are not indicative of engine longevity, wahoo!

Yeah but you don't see those extra horses until 6k rpm. I don't think I've ever revved my truck that high, have you? Even pulling my boat, uphill, passing a semi on the highway, I don't have to wind it up even close to that. Not trying to get into a dick swinging match here, but if it's as you say and numbers speak louder than words, then it's hard to ignore that the 4.0 makes more torque in a lower power band? For a pickup truck doing pickup truck things, that seems pretty valuable... But even that concerns me less than a truck that is constantly hunting for a gear and burns oil going up steep inclines lol
