Even in the US, mine said Hilux on the side and had a Hurst shifter. Early 70s.

On my 1990 4x4, bought brand new in Texas, the title/ registration both said Hilux.

I had a 1977 Toyota pickup, first car actually. Really liked the body style of the early Datsuns.

    Tasteful modifications :)
They just called them pickups, because they knew that no other car brands at the time could top the reliability and style of the Toyota truck. They’re the OG pickup brand

They just called them pickups because they only made 1 truck for the US and lacked imagination. If they had only imported 1 car and 1 truck we likely would have the BRAND NEW 1979 Car and Pickup to choose from

I learned to drive in a 1980 Chevy luv, which looked a lot like the datsun PU, and if memory serves was just a rebadged isuzu.

This one was for sale by me a while back.
Took it for a test drive with a friend who was interested in it. She passed on it and I didn't have the coin. Wanna say it was $1400?

Would have been a nice little trash hauler.
