What work negates the factory Toyota warranty?

I did a search but couldn't find much about this. So what kind of work, if any, will nullify the factory warranty (5yr, 60k mi)? If I were to guess, I'm sure replacing the tires/wheels, exhaust, and those type of minor accessories would be fine but lift kits, suspension, clutch, etc would not be covered?

I was just wondering as I see many people on here seem to really go all out on their Taco's. I'm guessing some of them don't care about the warranty? Or maybe wait until the warranty time is up before doing any major work?

    Thanks ahead of time.

I have a 2013. I am still under warranty. I put a lift and all on my taco. There was a court case that basically says the company must cover the part unless they can prove that your accessories caused the issue. I talked to the dealership and they will try to say you can do some and not do some. Unless they can prove that the part caused the issue , then they have to honor the warranty. I would suggest researching and talking to other on here and all before doing anything. Some people have more knowledge and experience with that kind of stuff.

If you put on a spacer kit and your shocks blow out, they are unlikely to cover it.

But if your speakers blow with all stock components, they will still honor the warranty even if you have a lift installed. (Some shady dealers would screw people over of anything was ever changed on the car)

But if you change the stereo and blow your speakers, they are unlikely to cover it.

Niiice, thanks a lot for the link! Gonna read a little more into it when I have some time later tonight. But it all makes sense now, whether or not the work you did caused the issue will be the answer to whether or not the issue is covered by your warranty.

Extended warranty is a different story.
It is not protected by Magnusson-Moss.

Generally, Toyota treats it the same way and won't deny a legitimate problem, but your fine print may indicate something different.
If your warranty is not through Toyota (even if you bought it from a Toyota dealership), I would get it refunded and buy a Toyota warranty.

    Pretty much.

The manufacturer can not deny warranty coverage based on 3rd-party work or parts unless parts and labor are provided at no charge, or they can prove that the 3rd party parts or labor caused the failure.
The manufacturer is not obligated to provide warranty service on 3rd-party parts or labor. If you install aftermarket ball joints and they fail, Toyota is not obligated to replace them under warranty.

Lift kits are getting into a touchy area because they can impact a number of different systems... u-joints, CV joints and boots, shocks, tire wear, etc... Generally, a reasonable "mainstream" kit doesn't cause any problems.

When I got my lift. I spoke with the parts department at the dealership. They said that as long as I went to an authorized dealer of the lift kit then it would be covered under powertrain.

That means they will honor the powertrain warranty.

I highly doubt they will warranty the actual non OEM Parts with the lift kit.

Only time I've heard of them doing that is when it is a dealer-installed package, but even then, you're going to be stuck with the original dealer. I can't see a dealer out of the area covering a problem with an aftermarket lift that a different dealer may have hacked.

According to the dealership the lift kit and all is covered aslong as I went to an authorized dealer.

I wouldn't believe it if I were you. Get them to put it in writing...

I'll bet they won't put it in writing.

    +1

There's no way Toyota is going to warranty an aftermarket lift.
They may warranty the remaining factory components if they know the lift was installed by a qualified shop.
That specific dealership may warranty the whole thing if you bought it through them and they did the installation...

But both of these situations are going to be specific to that dealership.
Take it across town and they won't care who installed it.

They may put it in writing that THEY will cover it, but that letter and $10 will get you a pair of taillights from any other dealership.

They said that they don't add lifts but if I went to "their" off road shop then it would be covered.

By that dealer and that dealer only.

Get it in writing... if it doesn't say that is will be covered by the Toyota factory warranty, they're blowing smoke to get you to give business to "their" (likely overpriced) shop.

And if they DO give it to you in writing, take it to your state attorney general's office.
Under Magnusson-Moss, requiring specific parts and labor as a condition of maintaining the warranty requires that said parts and labor be provided at no charge.
This situation is a bit different because it's an aftermarket lift, but the labor aspect applies.
