What didn't your 4th gen come with that you would want from Toyota?

    I don't have a 4G I would have to add everything. I saw this
    [IMG]

Why doesn't the Trailhunter have this or any kind of vinyl floor? Seems like a missed opportunity on an Overland vehicle. The wash out floor might not be compatible with the interior hybrid battery.

Vinyl or rubberized flooring on Toyota trucks is what I have been asking for for years.

Vinyl floor covering is what sold me on my current truck. I believe Ford wouldn't let you add vinly flooring to both F-150 and Super Duty STX trucks in 24. I also prefer the vinyl matterials in the SD Expedition and Transit over the vinly matterial in the 23 F-150.

I’ll take “Paint that doesn’t chip in a slight breeze” for $800, Alex.

The paint is the truck’s weakest link. I wish they’d relocate the factory somewhere that let them load it up with asbestos or lead or uranium or whatever the hell was in paint 40 years ago. Because my wife’s mascara is more durable than the paint on my truck.

This. If you're going to give me paint that's softer than a warm cup of ghee, then at least give me more than 2 mil of clearcoat so I can actually polish out the scratches and have clearcoat left.

After reading up on the new Tacoma, there are a bunch of things Toyota seemed to miss for a so-called adventure rig, rubber flooring is one of them. Long range fuel tank, transmissions that don’t fail, rear brake line routing that doesn’t get worn through from road debris on the wheel, more useable flexible storage in cab storage in the DC, most overlanders rip out the rear seats, be nice to have a seat delete from the factory, manual trans in the XtraCab along with OR trim, bring back the AC while they are it, better gas mileage.

Over the years, Toyota always seems to not get a few things not right. This new gen looks like they concentrated on options that no one cared about or wanted (suspension air seats for one), and completely missed the boat on needed upgrades, plus totally got rid of old favorites like the AC OR.

Funny you mention the Fords. The more I look at the Tacomas, the more I like the F150s, it has exactly what I want and need. 36 gallon tank standard! Useful rear seat storage with a flat floor, no rear seat delete needed. The 25s are up, noticed they now offer an 18” wheel on the STX trim, can use factory wheels instead of having to ditch the 20s. Better looking truck too. The Taco isn’t too terrible, but it is awfully busy with all those weird angles.

I think the 20" wheels from the Tundra should be a factory option and the Pro should come with the Tundra 6 cyl engine.

Yes, vinyl flooring like my FJ Cruiser (carpet is stupid in off-road trucks). And definitely an actual front skid plate (no deletion of the front cross member for attachment). Ridgid wheel well liners, not some flimsy fabric composite material. A heavy-duty group 27 battery, not the smaller 24 OEM. And all Tacoma's should come equipped with a real full-size spare tire/wheel. The "convenience donut spares are an insult to the customer, IMHO. (My list could easily be much longer.)

This right here!! I just picked up mine and as I was about to leave I see tons of scratches on the side of the bed and point it out. Sales guy told me "This happens sometimes when we peel off the protective plastic". Like what?? If removing plastic can scratch it up that easily, ya might want to do something about that...

The amount of “ overlanders “ buying 4th gen’s for overlanding is probably less than 5 percent of the entire market of these trucks. For the other 95%, I’m sure they dont mind carpet or a group 24 battery. Probably don’t need a factory rear seat delete option or a long range fuel tank.

The people that buy Pro and TH trims aren’t running the Rubicon or bombing through Baja.

I’m all for modding a vehicle and making it your own. But to say Toyota missed the mark b/c they didn’t offer all these options is idiocy. They build vehicles for the general public and the general public could care less about a rear seat delete option or long range tanks.

I have 2 things that if added in a later model year, I spend the $ to retrofit to my '24, and one thing I can correct for now:
-Rear seat bottoms that don't require a strap and snap to secure in the upright position. My '22 Nissan rear seats folded up and locked with the seat mechanism - no strap required. That seemed so cheap for Toyota to skimp on, as is not offering standard floor mats on a $40k vehicle with carpet (but I cared less about that since I knew I was putting floor liners in eventually to protect the carpet). Those snaps on the rear seats aren't going to last years. The one on my drivers side is already starting to 'loosen' if that makes sense.
-Lose the felt/cardboard wheel well liners for something sturdier. I live in the PNW where it rains 9 months out of the year. I can't see these holding up over time. Just waiting for the aftermarket to make something better.
-Any 4x4 should have a real skidplate, and again, this felt/cardboard solution that Toyota deemed acceptable seems useless. If you have a street driven truck, then that isn't necessary, right? Or maybe they added it for fuel efficiency like the air dam... A proper skidplate is something I am planning to retrofit on my SR5 even though it only sees dirt roads. Just haven't decided which path to take yet from the various options.

Right!? You can tell who their target market is, sports sedan transplants. Another member showed me that is what they do on BMWs. These are trucks for cripes sake…

The cheapening and cut corners on the basics is a real turnoff.

It looks to me the market is softening on trucks in general, with mid size trucks taking the biggest hit. Not good for truck manufacturers, Trailhunter in particular. I also think the market for overlanding has softened.

I think Toyota is going to offer the hybrid on the long bed and drop the Trailhunter if sales aren't up to snuff.

I wish they hadn’t taken away the cubby holes that used to be in the bed. That’s what I would add back . :annoyed:

Cubby holes in bed like my old Tacoma, 5-7 gallons more on gas tank, 2” more in backseat and harder paint.

I’m a little jealous of the Tundra with a rear window that rolls down completely. That would be sweet.

I'm curious as to why you feel that way. The current motor is both on paper and in practice a better motor than the outgoing V6 in every way. We don't know about longevity at this point, but we do know that well built forced-induction L4's can last a million years as long as they get serviced properly. The cousins of the T24A-FTS seem to be holding up fairly well in the various other cars they're in. As for a V8, if something as long as a DOHC L4 and as wide as a DOHC V6 would fit, there's no reason it wouldn't go in. The economy and emissions likely would be a real problem, though. I think I'd rather compromise with the V35A-FTS from the Tundra now that they've worked out the debris issue. The turbos would probably have to be jammed in there, though. Watching the effort required to change the turbos on the V6TT from old Audi S4's — another case of too much engine in too small a car — doesn't make me think that'd be the best idea.

I admit that the sound is lacking. I fully believe that a truck should sound the part and that a fairly large, oversquare V6 or L6 fits the bill for a truck the size of a Tacoma. I'm not sure the tradeoffs to get that noise are worth it, though. You can help it some with modifications to the induction and exhaust systems. For me, it's more of a preference than anything.
