Very clean build, plus functions pretty well from the way it seems

Nice, the 93 I just picked up is in Amazing condition for around here but obviously the lack of SA is lame.

MY personal wish-rig is a 70 series Landcruiser... but we don't have them in the states. I'm going to side with Toyota of course, so 1st gen tacoma or 4runner would be great as well as any land cruiser from the 80 series down to the 40.

That said, many folks in my Off road club have cherokees. They are cheap, they are light, they are extremely easy to wheel, and parts and mods are relatively very cheap. Our club's president wheels an XJ (Cherokee) that he bought for $500 with a lift, 34x10.5 or something TSLs. Budget wheelers for sure!

I would have to agree on the Landcruiser being best. Here's mine before somebody ripped it off!

I'd go XJ Cherokee with a Long Arm set up.
Had WJ (Grand Cherokee '00) As my first SUV and first 4X4. Great car, it was my DD and weekend warrior. Solid V8, Dana 35 front, Dana 44a rear, varilok diffs front, rear, and center. Iron rock offroad 3" shortarm lift, Carolina drivline driveshaft. Doestch tech shocks, for a little extended travel and integrated bumpstops. I loved that setup. Worked well both on and offroad. Only problem was that its too nice.. Shiny paint, leather, etc. I was too worried about resale value. Ended up selling for the tacoma, just wanted a pickup to haul my bike around.
I'd get a beater XJ and just beat it some more. Every project can get expensive, but these things were in production for so long there are lots of spare parts and aftermaket support. Buy something that is cheap that you can beat up and not worry about.

I would go with a Jeep CJ5 or Wrangler. Don't know if it could be done on the $5k budget.

I have to say, Landcruiser are sweet. Theres a clean one for sale in my town and a worker at my school is building one up. His is kind of a piece but should be decent.
