BUCKLE UP! It makes it harder for Aliens to pull you out of your Truck.
"possibly" 2 hrs of labor for a warranty job? How would they know how long it would take? You are getting bent over. Bent the F over.

Working at a Toyota dealership. They are doing exactly what they are supposed to do. I see about 3 cars a week with rodent damage. This damage is not covered under warranty but the good thing is your insurance company will take care of it. The technicians get paid per job, they are not hourly which is why they charge a diagnose fee. It's a hassle if that technician spends all that time tearing it apart to find out what is and then not get paid for it. They have to make money just like every other person.

Try having T-SB-0080-12 performed by somebody. It only covers up to 2011 model years from my knowledge, but that TSB covers the P0456 code:

Some 2005-2011 model year Tacoma vehicles witha 1GR-FE engine may exhibit a MIL "ON" condition with Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) P0456 - Evaporative Emission Control System Leak Detected (Very Small Leak) - when no leak is present. The Engine Control Module/ECM (SAE term: Powertrain Control Module/PCM) logic has been modified to reduce the possibility of this condition occurring.

    Repair Procedure:
    1. Using TIS Techstream, check for stored DTCs. If only DTC P0456 is present, proceed to step 2.
    2. Clear DTCs
    3. Confirm that the fuel cap is tight. If it is loose, tighten the cap and finish the repair. If it is not loose, go to step 4.
    4. Check for the Authorized Modifications Label affixed to the vehicle in the location shown in Figure 1. confirm if the ECM (PCM) calibration has been updated. If the calibration ID listed is NOT the latest ECM (PCM) calibration -- go to step 5. [note: the label is on the underside of the hood near the latch which says, 'Toyota Motor Corporation Authorized Modifications'. They show the following fields: 1) Replacement ECM (PCM) Part Number (i.e., 89661-04A34), 2) New Calibration IDs (i.e., 30426400) 3) Dealer Code 4) Date Completed) 5) This SB Number]
    5. Flash reprogram the ECM (PCM)

From here on they talk about using a TechStream and a GR8 Battery Diagnostic Station to flash the system, which is 2 more pages of instructions.

I was out of warranty at the time I had this occur, so it cost me a neat $400 from an independent shop. If your truck is facing the same issue as mine, there will be no leak. The repair shop will clear the code, and the code will come back in a few months until you finally have this taken care of.

When my local dealer tried screwing me, I drove to the next closest at 2 hours away. Crappy dealer told me the same BS about diagnostic fees and repairs if it's not covered. Drove to the different dealer and the next day they were replacing my driveshaft under warranty with no hassle. Ditch your crappy dealer.

Cheaper on eBay, but are they the real deal, with all the counterfeit parts out there?

I wanted to be sure I got a true OEM product and I got it that day without waiting.

A dealer I used would give an estimate for diagnostic of an issue and a repair cost estimate. If they fixed the found issue, the diagnostic fee was waived. By doing so protects them from finding the issue and then the owner taking the vehicle elsewhere or fixing themselves.

Damn, you guys are required to do emissions on a 2 year old truck? New vehicles bought here are exempt for 7 years or until it changes owners, whichever is first

Yea, MD law is every two years. Some places in PA are every year.

It varies by county in Maryland. Over here on Delmarva, Maryland doesn't have emission checks at all.

Yup, put in 9 years living in Salisbury(Wicomico County), worked in Easton(Talbot), for a few years as and managed a fleet of vehicles never a single emissions check.

    Made my escape last fall.

Now that I'm in Delaware it is no checks for the first 5 years on a new car, then every 2 years.

    - - - UPDATE - - -

Took the truck to R&H Toyota in Reisterstown where they ran tests and determined it was a faulty O-ring between fuel pump and gas tank causing the leak. They fixed it under warranty, I took it back for emissions test and got a clean bill of health.

Side note, I didn't find out until I got home that the reverse camera was not working. Slid under the truck to check wiring, and sure enough the plug for the camera was just hanging there, along with all of the wiring for the tow package. I plugged the camera back in, used the existing cable management ties to secure wires back to truck, and called the dealer. Service rep apologized and threw in a complimentary oil change and tire rotation for the troubles.

This is fuckin GREAT! and what should've happened at the first dealershit. I think I'd have to go back there and show them how good the 2nd dealership was about taking care of the problem and let them know how much they suck for wasting your time and trying to rob you for a manufacturer defect while under warranty......loudly in front of a Saturday morning full house service crowd. Glad it worked out how it should've to begin with.
