If you wanted to get your truck to 1,000,000 miles would you change your engine and transmission oil at the (1) OEM recommended intervals, (2) a little sooner then the OEM intervals or (3) longer than the OEM intervals?

This would all depend on your usage IMO...

Getting to that kind of mileage would mean you’re too cheap to send oil samples off to a lab to determine when exactly to change, so I’m stumped.

This guy changed oil about once per month. Of course that varied between 8000-10,000 miles. He didn't service the transmission for 400,000 miles. The original engine needed a new head gasket at about 900,000 miles but was otherwise still in great shape. But rather than replace the gasket they got one out of a scrapyard with 100,000 on it. When this was posted he had 1.2 million miles and counting. I haven't seen an update so I have no idea if the truck is still running.

I'm going back to 5k drains and may change out my atf and other fluids at 75k. That and keep rust proofing the chassis and replace random rubber boots/seals as needed.

    OP,

    Do you work for Toyota?

it sounds very much like a corporate question..

I would do sooner than suggested by the way.

Lol. Nope. I’m in aerospace. I thought asking a question this way will get to the real answer that you might not otherwise get by asking how often do you change your oil. If you are not going to own the vehicle much beyond 100,000 miles the 10,000 engine oil change intervals are more than fine. Actually 5 changes every 20,000 miles wouldn’t make much difference.

Now, asking how often you would want to change your oils if you were to keep it beyond 300,000 might yield a different response.

When I sold my 2nd Gen it was 13 years old and had just shy of 600,000 km and the engine was running very well. Still getting high 600 km per tank on no-ethanol 91 octane. I always used full synthetic oil ( no choice on the 3rd Gen) and changed the oil sooner than recommended most of the time. Same treatment is applying to my 2018.

One word: maintenance, it doesn't matter when it gets done, just matters that is does.

Mostly 340,000 miles of wear on the '96. A sharp looking Gasshole for the '21
To hit 1 million I recommend never ever drive thru Atlanta, GA. That's a pro-tip, for free. Before my '96 was murdered in Atlanta I did change the oil every 3000 miles up to 200K then I went to 4000 mile oil changes after that. I made it to 342K. Engine was solid as a rock, burned no oil, the used oil was clean and purty. I know this topic is touchy and smarter folks know better but it worked for me, glad I put in the effort and cost. My '21 oil interval is 4000-5000, full syn and at my age I bet the truck out lives me.

Keep a spare drive train in the garage and don't worry about the oil change interval. The money you save will pay for the spare.

I would not mind driving a million miles in my Tacoma as a Hotshot hauler.
Better to be out on the road than sitting in the office thinking of being outside with fresh air.

Do electronics degrade based on miles driven??? Or with time? Or cycles?

Miles driven and time would be one and the same I suppose. I suspect that the more complex the electronics are tghe more prone they are to fail. I could be wrong tho.

I disagree. Some people drive 15,000 miles a year, some less and some more. The time to 1 million will be different for EVERYONE.
