I see people post a good bit about how the new 4G's are a disappointment. I'm wondering what these people would have wanted the 4G's to be. These people tend to compare the new gen a lot to the 3G's and I understand that there is a lot to like about the outgoing gen, but there have to be improvements at some point. What would ya'll have done different?

Major disappoint is you are paying more for a truck but its not actually more of a truck. 1200 lbs payload is pathetic.

With the hybrid i-force max models the payload will be even lower!

The Toyota Hilux has a payload of 2,200 lbs. Tacoma should at least match the Hilux.

I will add that interior and exterior design looks like they are trying way too hard.

IMO new Canyon looks way better. Seem quite a few up here and man it’s a sharp looking truck.

Maybe when I see 4G in person I’ll change my mind, but I doubt it.

Are they even rated the same way ? there is 0 reason why a tacoma would be that much lower.

Tundra max is 1,940, you're saying a Tacoma should be higher?

Toyota thinks we want a three-quarter size Tundra, so that’s what they gave us. It’s almost like the idea that they can have two different sized trucks that look drastically different was excruciatingly painful for them.

Pretty much every Toyota now is just a different size version of a basic design philosophy for that market segment with very very few exceptions.

Look at Ford, the Ranger, F150, and super duty are all styled distinctly. And the Ranger has much cleaner lines. So do the new Colorado and Canyon. You don’t need to have weird, sharp angles, dams, and spoilers everywhere.

If I was in a market for a new truck today, I would seriously think about cross shopping GM and Ford.

If the baby Hilux can do it why not?

Yeah, increased wheelbase is a bummer…

Short wheelbase 3rd gens are already too long for some obstacles off road. I have personal experience :)

I checked here...I checked a single cab long bed and it is 1030kg and 4wd GR sport 4 door @ 1020kg. That makes no sense. I am thinking this is a rating issue. NO way in hell are they rated the same way as they are in the states.

Meh 132" vs 127". I'd think that it's a pretty minor change. If wheel base matters that much a 4R makes more sense. Its like a full 20" shorter.

Gladiator is 137" .... so tacoma is still a bit shorter.

I think the direction Toyota's going with 4th gen is pretty clear: Tacoma is a life style vehicle for recreational hobbies.
Serious work with some serious hauling just gotta step up to Tundra.
If that's still not enough then buy American HD trucks

Yes, 4R is way better off-road than the taco. They are beasts.

If they made MT 4R and I had money for both, I would have gladly own both :)

Unfortunately I can only afford one vehicle. A truck box and MT is a must for me. So taco it is.

I think you hit the nail in the head with this, and I don't see anything wrong with it. Some people do not need something that can haul a RV but still want something that they can offroad and can make Home Depot runs in... I think the new 4G'S fir this category well.

Yea it's a really short list (pun intended?!) with those requirements.

But then they had to make the Tundra unnecessarily complex and expensive as well.

Up until not too long ago you could buy a totally basic bitch Tundra without weird turbos or hybrids or electronic louvers.

Hilux does not have a composite bed and I believe a bigger rear differential.

Need to verify the Hilux rear diff size to the Tacoma.
